Sorry to be so negative, but I have to say, the slugfests have been awful so far. I hate the new structure, and there is no banter or general discussion like there usually is… The dialogue is so predictable. Maybe it’s missing Tom & Chris or something, I don’t know. Hopefully there’ll be a pre-Emmys slugfest or one or two more impromptu live videos before the Emmys air. I appreciate the time & effort put into the videos and their organizing, but something just feels off with them this year.August 12, 2014 at 1:43 pm #327109
I like the slugfests this year because they seem more in-depth than ever. I agree that it is missing a bit of energy, but it’s hard to create fireworks when some of these races seem pretty easy to call.August 12, 2014 at 1:59 pm #327110
A slugfest without Tom, Paul, and Boomer is not a slugfest.
With all due respect to the others, there is an fan boy group think quality that is way too prelevant there. They might as well have done the slugfests with their Breaking Bad posters in the background lol. Tom, Paul, and Boomer usually don’t prescribe to it and call the others out. There was very little disagreement or new perspectives offered. Marcus was really the only ones who offered a new insight to most of the discussions.
I hope there is another live slugfest with everyone before the ceremony.
And if things seem so open and shut, perhaps we didn’t learn a damn thing from last year. I am glad Marcus reminded Rob L of his incredibly dismissive Merrit Wever comments in last years slugfest lol.August 12, 2014 at 2:51 pm #327111
These slugfests take a lot of time and effort, as we aim to provide clear and concise analysis of each submitted episode as we see them. If there is little disagreement, it is because we agree. It’s pretty simple.
I for one don’t appreciate being called a fanboy. And I am always making a point that groupthink is pervasive at this time of year, and we must always remember the surprises and inexplicable surprise Emmy wins.
So thanks so much for your negative feedback, dude93 and montana82. I suggest you stop watching our slugfest videos from now on, because I would really hate to bore you any further.August 12, 2014 at 2:56 pm #327112
Nice slugfests guys!August 12, 2014 at 2:58 pm #327113
Apologies Rob, I don’t mean to personally attack anyone involved, I’m just perplexed as to why it became such an issue this year. These slugfests were never this much bother (it seemed) before in previous years, and they just sort of occured in a seemingly impromptu manner, with lots of lively discussions between several editors and contributors. I never heard any of the editors having to explain themselves about the difficulty in organizing the videos before, until this year, strangely. All through Oscar season, it was never a problem either…
These message boards ought to be places for feedback and discussion, positive or negative, and you as editors and contributors to the website have to be open to criticism or any kind of reception if you’re going to be publicly displaying the videos. I didn’t mean to cause any major offence, it just seems like a good Emmy year, and it’s a shame that so much change has occured with regard to the usually exciting slugfest video feature here on Gold Derby.August 12, 2014 at 3:03 pm #327114
I love the slugfests. I love that there is a forum for open debate vocally vs in writing. The passion is heard more in voice than in writing. Keep up the good work guys!August 12, 2014 at 3:13 pm #327115
I should also say that we do appreciate constructive criticism, and hear your call for more live slugfests and more banter. Dude93, I get what you’re saying. I didn’t mean to suggest you weren’t allowed to criticise.
But other comments in this thread and other threads calling us out as fanboys and calling into question our inability to disagree with each other are insulting.
This year has been an interesting one – I draw your attention to Tom’s explanation in this thread: http://www.goldderby.com/forum/topics/view/8619/page:2#337586 .August 12, 2014 at 3:24 pm #327116
Yes, I recall Tom’s explanation of the various changes and alterations that had to be implemented this year… I take all of that on board, and once again, I do appreciate all the work & commitment put into the website and the videos thus far.August 12, 2014 at 3:33 pm #327117
Wow, we have a whole other slugfest going on right here! Everybody, duck!
Kudos to Rob, Marcus, Daniel, Matt, Ralph, Charlie and Riley for jumping far ahead of the rest of us, watching all of the episodes so fast, formulating strong opinions. Chris, Paul and I, quite frankly, are just now catching up. We’ll start doing more of these soonest and we promise STRONG OPINIONS.
But, remember, I also told you guys how much hell we got this year from the networks not to blast their nominees during the voting period. We really pissed them off in years past, so they obviously thought this year: Why the hell should we give Gold Derby the episode titles if they’re only going to ridicule us at a time when judging are voting? They can handle us slapping them around AFTER the voting, but they think we’re being bullies earlier. I don’t know why the TV academy doesn’t release this info. If they did, it would take the pressure off of us, but being politic is a reality for us.
In the slugfests released so far, Rob, Marcus, Daniel, Matt, Ralph, Charlie and Riley try hard to be fair, balanced and cool-headed ON PURPOSE. We published some of these during the voting period (like the ones that went up today for supporting acting, etc.) because we HAD to. Since the Emmys moved up a month, that shortens the time we have to do this in-depth analysis. We’ve got a job to do and we’re doing the best we can to make this work. Including Rob & Co. — and I think they’ve done GREAT. And we’re all very thankful.
Over the next week and a half, we’ll be doing lots more of these and we promise to LET LOOSE and truly come out slugging! If it’s blood on the floor that you Derbyites want, you’ll get it. I can’t wait to pummel the hell outta Rob over some of his RIDICULOUS, LAME-BRAINED PICKS!

Totally understandable, Tom, thanks for piping in. Sorry for the negativity guys, looking forward to some more Emmy chat over the coming weeks!August 12, 2014 at 3:40 pm #327119
Oh and Tom, you’ve got your own ‘splaining to do – Amy Poehler in sixth!!!??? WTF! LolAugust 12, 2014 at 3:47 pm #327120
Well, if you guys haven’t recorded the lead actress (drama) slugfest yet, I hope Rob retaliates and dismantles your 3rd place ranking of Michelle Dockery, Tom!
I’m with Rob — Caplan has a very good shot.
Repost from drama lead actress thread (this was towards Marcus):
As far as what I see in Caplan’s tape, she has nudity, range, context, empathy, impact, etc. Who isn’t going to cheer for a woman who stands up for herself and defends herself against a guy who strikes her in the face? Joanne Froggatt cowers in fear when the same happens to her; Caplan fights back. She challenges the 50’s norms of society, and the camerawork really emphasizes her introduction to the series. At first, we see her in the distance, and we marvel — like Bill does — at her beauty. As the episode progresses, we see her from Bill’s perspective (from behind a desk) as she begins to spar with him in her job interview.
When we finally see her naked, we expect a moment of sentimental vulnerability. Instead, she eschews the norms of the time, and tells Ethan they should just be friends. I found it really powerful, and I think there are a lot of reasons why men and women would rank it very high (maybe not first, but we know you just have to be liked by everyone).
What did you not like about it? You have it ranked below Dockery.
