The trailer looked problematic as **** and edited like Lifetime trash but with a budget. Still gonna watch though.

Rooting for Robinson to get that Emmy nod he should’ve had Boardwalk Empire and Mara to get that Emmy win that she was robbed of for Pose (if she was guest eligible, sigh).

Trust me it’s nothing like that. It has an independent film feel to it.

Watched the first three episodes yesterday, this is really good. It’s such a tricky story to tell, for obvious reasons, but I think Fidell is handling it very well so far. It’s not problematic, imo, at least from a storytelling perspective. It’s obvious from the start that Mara’s character’s actions are extremely inappropriate despite her not outwardly expressing interest in her student. It’s textbook grooming – she accepts his offer to tutor him, she bails him out when he gets in trouble at the party, she shows up at his house instead of waiting for him at the diner, she tells him to call her Claire, etc. These actions blur the line between her being his teacher and her being any other woman he’d meet walking down the street. Both parties obviously play a role in any affair, and that’s no different here, but it’s not as though Robinson’s character came on to Mara’s character out of no where, despite him making the first move. She allowed it to get to that point.

My favorite part of the series so far, and what’s probably the most haunting moment, is when they are in the car together at the end of episode 3. We know Robinson’s character is interested in her, but you could tell he didn’t realize the possible ramifications if the two did sleep together until Mara’s character finally showed mutual interest. He’s visibly nervous and scared meanwhile she’s in control. She holds all the power. I really do think it’s very well done so far.

As for the performances, Mara and Robinson are both great and they have really good chemistry. I’m sure we’ll see more *acting* as the series moves forward but I like them both a lot in this.

Been avoiding spoilers on social (all FX shows to go a BBC streaming service like a week or so after it’s done airing in the US), only for a scene to go viral on TikTok (1.2m likes, 7.3m views. so far).

Is no one watching this? I would definitely recommend starting it if you haven’t already.

Kate Mara is brilliant through the first 4 episodes, especially in the episode that came out this week. She might find herself landing an Emmy nomination, tbh. Fidell has done such a great job navigating the teacher-student relationship. In the last episode, we see the power shift in Claire’s favor big time. Eric is just a kid with a legitimate crush who’s fully being taken advantage of and is being given mixed signals left and right. Claire has him wrapped around her finger. It’s scary to watch, honestly, but I think it’s an important story to tell. I just hope the rest of the series is as good as the first four episodes.

I’m loving this. I watched 3 episodes so far and I’m really into this. Both Mara and Robinson are amazing, especially Mara. Their chemistry really works and both are extremely believable in their roles. Its runtime makes it even easier to watch as well. Highly recommend.

Glad that beetween this, I Hate Suzie, I May Destroy You and Normal People, the half hour drama has proven to be a viable story telling method.

I am absolutely loving this series. It’s extremely well done and nuanced.

Kate Mara is fantastic in it and adds real layers to Claire.

Nick Robinson is also brilliant in what could be an incredibly grating role if it were in the hands of a lesser actor. Eric has all the boisterous, stereotypical traits of a teenage high school boy (screaming “SENIORS” in the hall, calling his friend “bro” 6 times in the one sentence, drinking and partying at every chance he gets etc) that make young male characters so irritating and boring in TV and film; but Robinson has the charisma and ability to make Eric sympathetic, likeable and real. Not that those are important qualities for a character to be interesting but I think it elevates what could have been just a brilliant showcase for Mara into an equal pairing for both.

Mara sits episode 7 out, surprisingly, and leaves it all to Robinson. He is excellent and in every scene.

I would love for this show to get some recognition for both leads and for series. Mara is in a bloodbath category but the performance is there. Robinson has the clearer pathway. But I’d hate for one to get in without the other.

I think that should the mold for the future. Honestly.
Half-hour shows are mostly more cohesive.

FYC TV: Stateless | We Are Who We Are | Cate Blanchett in Stateless | Paapa Essiedu in I May Destroy You

FYC Movie: Boys In The Band | Toni Collette in I’m Thinking Of Ending Things | Jim Parsons in The Boys In The Band | Shailene Woodley in Endings, Beginnings | Zoey Deutch in Buffaloed | Sebastian Stan in Endings, Beginnings

Between this, I Hate Suzie, I May Destroy You, and Normal People, it’s year that proved the success of half hour drama.

I’m not sure if it was the story line in general or the trailers/promos/clips in general, but this has not interested me from the start. I liked Robinson in Love, Simon and Mara was great in House of Cards (working well with he who shall not be named). But the basic premise is a hard no for me. If this were a male teacher/female student, the tone would be completely different, but should it be?

I will ask, is the teacher portrayed in a predatory fashion or just a victim or circumstance?

To be complete, I do know someone whose wife was a teacher and had a relationship with an older student.
