The last episode was so good! This topic could have been handled so bad in wrong hands, the show depicts the situation in such a way that we see both sides in their full complexities.

Kate Mara and Nick Robinson really deserved to be remembered at the awards.

What a great show this ended up being! They handled the subject matter better than I could have expected them to. And most importantly, they never forgot to develop its two main characters; I was really invested in both Claire and Eric throughout. Ultimately, it’s a very sad story; it’s really about how messy and difficult life can be. The final scene is such a poignant and appropriate note to end on.

Kate Mara was terrific and Nick Robinson proved himself as a dramatic actor. Really brilliant work from both.

Thoughts on the first two episodes.

    • first time I’ve heard “Rack City” sober since 2013.
    • the constant screen spilt with the phone was irritating at first but grew on me (mostly).
    • really liked how Eric said “I feel I can trust you” to Claire. How many times in true crime docs or sexual assault cases have you heard of the survivor’s attacker being someone they knew / trusted.
    • lorde, the end of 1×02 is the first time I think a needle drop have actively ruined a scene for me.

Watched the first episode. Didn’t really enjoy it much and the writing was messy, all over the place in perspective and unrealistic.

However Robinson was excellent (why isn’t he in the awards conversation?) and I am intrigued by Mara’s character. I’ll keep watching.

    Grade: B-
    MVP: Nick Robinson

Totally forgot I watched this. Can’t say I loved it, but not because of the content. I think it actually handled the subject material very well and in a super realistic way. It wasn’t romanticizing/glorifying it but it also didn’t take the easy way out. Robinson and Mara were both phenomenal, and I’d love to see awards recognition for both of them. A solid series, nothing out of this world, but definitely better than I was expecting.

In terms of awards predictions, I don’t think it’s really making a splash anywhere.

I think Robinson’s chances are higher at the Globes than the prediction center is reflecting, but it’s strange how the HFPA’s love for the young hot new film stars does not translate to television. I might be more convinced if his Love Simon snub was more talked about, but no one really seemed to be up in arms about it so there’s no pressure to get him a nomination. If he does get in at the Globes then he’s got a solid shot at the Emmys, but even then, newer contenders like It’s a Sin, Halston, and The Serpent could out-buzz him. Though with how barren that category is looking to be, with contenders like Cranston and Rock garnering zero chatter whatsoever and the potential for Rahim or McGregor to flop, just the fact that people are talking about A Teacher could push Robinson in even if he misses the Globes.

As much as I really liked Mara and think she’s deserving, the lead actress category is the only one that’s truly overstuffed, and I just don’t think she’s making it, especially with such a deeply unlikable character.

Nothing happening for it in any other category.

TLDR: Robinson’s the only one with a chance. Definitely no at SAG, a pleasant surprise spoiler at the Globes, and a very shaky maybe at the Emmys.

Never posted my full thoughts on this but I’ll just say Mara is fantastic and should happen at the Emmy’s in a just world. I still think about the last scene of the series every now and then too. Great writing.

Yes, Jays! Kate Mara better get nominated somewhere, and that final scene is so good! I’ve seen some people call it “unearned” or “obligatory,” but it seemed completely organic to me, as well as fully earned. Not all episodes were well written, but this one certainly was!

What did people find unearned about it? It’s a pretty bleak ending lol, it’s not like either character has their story finished on a high note. I thought it was perfect – because in most of these student/teacher affairs, the teacher ends up being the person who’s most “okay” years down the line, whereas the student is more affected emotionally and mentally.

Finished this one. It was a tough watch and not all the episodes were good but there were a few standouts like episode 3.

Mara and Robinson were excellent. Especially the former in the finale. It’s a shame they aren’t getting any awards traction.
