    EDIT: I spoke too soon.

I thought both shows were very entertaining. I particularly enjoyed Tomei’s performance as Edith. Yet without a doubt, the absolute best moment of the entire night was Marla Gibbs reprising her role as Florence. Her presence in the cast was not leaked ahead of time and I am wondering if the rest of the cast knew about it or if they were as surprised as the audience. Surely they knew but Sykes’ massive smile when she opened the door to see Gibbs has me wondering.

It’s crazy that Marla Gibbs has never won an Emmy!

I am sooooo glad that Marla Gibbs made an appearance. I thought that they might have her appear as Mother Jefferson.

I wonder if Marla Gibbs could get submitted to the Emmy ballot for this. Marla was definitely robbed of a Guest Actress Emmy for her appearance on Scandal.

I agree that The Jeffersons was better because there was less impersonation and more acting. Woody, an actor I really like, was trying to do an impersonation of Carroll O’Connor doing Archie Bunker, and it didn’t always work. Tomei was MUCH more successful with her Edith tribute. Kemper was great as a rethought Gloria and Ike Barinholtz and Anthony Anderson were solid as well.

Wanda Sykes made a wonderful Louise Jefferson I thought. While nothing can top one of Isabel Sanford’s deep husky calls of GEORGE!, she made it her own. Jamie Foxx settled in as George after some rough going in All in the Family. Stephen Tobolowsky was a fun Mr. Bentley. I loved Kerry Washington and Will Ferrell as Helen & Tom. Jovan Adepo had great moments in both shows as Lionel (although how funny would it have been to have 2 actors play Lionel since 2 did back in the 70s haha) and they gave Amber Stevens West nothing to do as Jenny. Jackee Harry about stole the show because she’s just awesome. Then there’s Marla Gibbs. It was wonderful seeing her at the door as Florence. What a treat and surprise. Although, when this project was first announced, Justina Machado was announced as Florence. I don’t know if this was a bait & switch, or a last minute decision or what. I know Justina would have been great, but Gibbs is always welcome to see.

I think that this should be a contender for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). Kimmel could finally win an Emmy and frankly I think that this is the first time he’d deserve one. My only problem with the surprise Gibbs appearance (for which I wish there was some way for her to get Emmy attention, but, alas, no individual performance in a variety program category means no place for her to enter for a performance like this) is the treatment of Machado. I don’t think she would have been right for Florence, but she could have played Carmen, the replacement maid who showed up when there was an attempt to spin Florence off from The Jefferson, if producers chose to do one of those episodes. Plus, it would have been nice to get some publicity for the #SaveODAAT movement.

The actors should be eligible for the limited series categories. Jesus Christ Superstar Live surprised with 3 acting noms last year. If I could I’d add standout Marisa Tomei to my predictions right now.

Gibbs wasn’t in enough of the program to qualify in longform because of the Ellen Burstyn rule.

I found Jamie Foxx very cringy during the All in the Family episode. Based on his personality, I could definitely see him flubbing his line and breaking character on purpose for the attention – but I realize that is probably just me being overly critical. For those saying Harrelson was just playing O’Connor playing Archie, Foxx was definitely doing the same by playing Hemsley.

One of the funniest parts was hearing Jennifer Hudson sing, “frish don’t fry in the kitchen”. She is so talented but her pronunciation has always been such an issue.

Seeing Marla Gibbs and Jackee was awesome!

Sometimes I wonder if producers in Hollywood think Jennifer Hudson is the only black girl that can sing cause she’s the one who always gets called for random things. It’s tiring.
