has anybody seen the new Netflix film “American Son” starring Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale? I just watched it and it is a very strong movie. Washington gives a great performance.
My question is does this film have any shot at nominations in any category. Kerry is fantastic and would be a very worthy nominee for Best Actress. Would this be a contender at the Oscars or is this more of an Emmy type movie? Does netflix submit all their films as Oscar films or do they consider some of their films as TV movies?November 3, 2019 at 1:39 am #1203163706
If they do not screen it on movie theaters in LA or NY, it is considered a TV movie.
I just love movies. And awards.November 3, 2019 at 11:24 pm #1203165022
Netflix always marketed this movie as a “television event” just to to submit this movie to Emmys. Its trailer even came out on Emmys night. So it will definitely compete in television movie category.November 4, 2019 at 4:29 am #1203165134
For the record, it has a 33 on MC right now. So yeah, this is going no where.November 4, 2019 at 5:22 am #1203165218

Lead actress in a limited series is too stacked for Kerry Washington to happen for a panned movie.November 6, 2019 at 7:41 pm #1203169253
Thanks guys, I really had no idea how it was decided which movies were considered for what award shows.November 7, 2019 at 3:36 am #1203169497
Maybe it should be a special award, directly awarded to the winner. The category might be dead, but there’s still great films. Deadwood, El Camino, are truly great films that deserve recognition. Then again for the last 3 years a non-film was been winning, so who knowsNovember 7, 2019 at 6:32 am #1203169650
Yeah, regardless of its quality, I think that American Son is practically a lock to be nominated for Outstanding Television Movie. This past year, there were only 21 contenders on the Emmy ballot for the category, with none of those endless Hallmark Channel movies even submitted, and no performers from television movies were even nominated. With only this and two more coda movies (El Camino and Transparent’s Musicale Finale) as real options right now, there is likely to be some serious filler yet again to reach 5 nominees. I really wish that there was some sort of viability threshold, like the Oscars used to do for Best Original Song, to determine how many nominees there should be here.
