I know that sometimes (obviously not always) the SAG awards copy what the EMMYS did the year before in terms nominees and winners. So going by that can I expect to see Game of Thrones and Veep win best drama series cast and best comedy series next year at the SAG awards??October 2, 2015 at 11:31 pm #363434
The big 2 went to the same shows at both ceremonies 4 times. They did not 17 times. So I would not neccessarily expect it.
That said, either of them is one of the possible smart choices to expect as a winner in its category.October 2, 2015 at 11:50 pm #363435
I think Game of Thrones has the best shot. I feel that its main competition is Downton Abbey and House of Cards. I don’t think Veep will win the ensemble award, Orange is the New Black will repeat with Modern Family as its best competition.
Current rankings would be:
1) Game of Thrones
2) Downton Abbey
3) House of Cards
1) Orange is the New Black
2) Modern Family
3) The Big Bang Theory
5) Shameless – my oddball predictionOctober 3, 2015 at 5:36 am #363436
I’m not sure on Thrones, only because that is probably set to win Stunt Ensemble again. Homeland may be a rival there. In the main Drama Ensemble, Downton Abbey is probably a large threat.
Veep poses a big possibility to Comedy Ensemble. This last season more than any other it embraced the whole cast, rather than mainly JLD, with a bit of Scott, Hale and Chlumsky, and the odd story for the rest. That could really benefit their odds with SAG.
In either case, the biggest ensemble show, Orange Is The New Black, in the race will prove pivotal in whoever wins depending on where it is categorised. It may stand a huge shot with Drama Ensemble. Possibly more than it does of placed Comedy because of the way Veep changed this year.October 3, 2015 at 9:15 am #363437
If OITNB goes into Drama, Veep has a really good shot of winning. I think GOT has a huge shot of winning Drama, especially if OITNB stays in Comedy.
Give Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar.October 3, 2015 at 9:31 am #363438
What about Transparent? Has SAG officially classified it as a Comedy or a Drama yet? If it is deemed a Comedy as it was at the Golden Globes and the Emmys, I would imagine they’d have a great shot at the Ensemble award. The cast is comprised of underappreciated character actors who are surely well known to the majority of the voting body due to their extensive previous work in the industry.

GOT is probably going to win Drama, but I don’t see Veep winning with OITNB as their competition. From what I know, they can’t change the category placement once the show is submitted (that’s the case with Jessica Lange going Drama instead of Mini/Movie all these years, right?)October 3, 2015 at 9:50 pm #363440

Well they have made exceptions, William H Macy was submitted in Drama for the first three years of Shameless and snubbed, then won for its fourth season in Comedy. And OITNB was submitted as a drama in its first season then won in Comedy in its second.

Since every award in Holywood will be given out by popularity vote from now on, we will see more lineup between Emmys and Guilds than we’ve seen in the past, yes.
When Homeland won the Drama series three years ago, not everyone saw that coming because it had a little showing when it comes down to the nominations . I think it was one of those rare cases that the tapes really mattered and helped its win.(It always helps when Pilots were in play.) It also helped 24 a ten years ago which also had been produced by Alex Gansa.
Other than those two, all the other Drama series winners in last 15 years have won the SAG after they won the Drama series at the Emmys. So this is good news for GoT.
The movie industry may consist of snobs but when it comes to TV they prefer to watch shows others call ”guilty pleasure”. Because they don’t take TV too seriously and they don’t want to tire their head when they’re watching that. That’s why it took so long Breaking Bad to win anything.
That’s why shows like Downton Abbey, OITNB, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Houseviwes, Will&Grace, Modern Family were so popular at SAG. Will they embrace a movie like those if they were a motion picture? No. But it’s entertaining enough to spend their time when they come home from the work.
And let’s admit it. Actors are and always will be the least snobby members of industy because most of them are where they are now because of their appearance; not because of their brain, creativity or their extraordinary knowledge about filmmaking. Not everyone can claim ”I’m a writer and I want to be a member of WGA” if that person didn’t publish anything first(And not that many people wants to say that, to be honest.)
but any idiot can say ”I’m an actor”(Everyone wants to say that) after being an extra on 3 commercials and get a SAG card.
GoT has been a very niche show from the beginning. Yeah, it had a very loyal fanbase on internet that was going crazy for everything about that it, but that was one of those shows that requires all of your attention when you watch it. Nerds on internet(like me) may have found a time to study the history and familys of Westeros on online but the show was too complicated and complex for casual viewers.(and SAG voters)
This is the first year I felt like it really became a cultural hit and impressed the all kinds of viewers as well. Many loyal fans thrashed its lazy and cheesy storytelling this year but that was the reason how it increased its popularity this year as well.
This was also the first year, my friends didn’t ask me anything like ”What was that persons intention again?” ”What was his name?” ”Didn’t he die?” ”What the HELL is going on?”
Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, Veep, Louie. These shows can’t win anything in SAG. They are too edgy and clever. They don’t have an incredibly popular and cult characters like Cookie, Crazy Eyes, Dr.Bailey, Sue Slyvester.
All the election talk going on in USA might help Veep’s case, but I doubt that. Orange is still popular enough to win this award twice more.
JLD just should be grateful to SAG if they give her an another Actor for this role.
