Thoughts on this?
I personally don’t find this to be as bad as what we’ve been hearing about others, and Aziz is actually being defended on social media regarding this, but is it enough to hurt his career?

I guess you could say his behaviour wasn’t “as bad” as that of Weinstein, Spacey, Louis C.K. or even Franco, but that would downplay the fact it was still insensitive and inappropriate and definitely constitutes as sexual misconduct, even if it wasn’t deliberate harassment and he didn’t actually understand what he was doing.
To his credit, he apologised when he realized he’d hurt her. When it comes to his career, if this remains the first and last revelation about him and he publicly owns what he did, comes out with an earnest and humble apology and perhaps donates a few bucks to Time’s Up, I can see his show surviving.

They were on a date and he actually apologized before it went public.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 14, 2018 at 10:34 am #1202467144Why are you guys making excuses for him? Because you like his work and want it to continue? It’s irrelevant- if we allow sexual misconduct to go less punished than the rest than we mark it as a more acceptable version of assault and rape when all three need to be categorically shunned rather than ignoring the fact that the former (and the attitude behind it) is what leads to the latter two just because it isn’t “as bad”.

I do think we have to be careful with condemning and ostracizing everyone who’s ever been inappropriate, because honestly, that may be the majority of Hollywood. It is a moral conundrum to rank misdeeds. But hell, the justice system does it. I do love the conversation this has started and how it’s forced people to be more aware and cautious of their behaviors. However, if you’re simply a perverted megalomaniac that makes no difference.

I for one am not making any excuses for his unexcusable behavior, but there is a difference between severe sexual violence such as rape and this. Needless to say, neither should be allowed or accepted, and both should be punished, but the degree of punishment has to correlate with the seriousness of the deed.

Remember when the internet exploded at Matt Damon for saying something very similar to this? I for one, think this is very reasonable. But a lot of people tend to blow these things way out of proportion because it’s a sensitive subject. I don’t condone this behavior but I don’t want Ansari’s career to end over it.
