Just caught up with this. It was good, but could have been great. Basically going to echo what a lot of folks here said already. Jackman delivered a good performance and this is one of his best, considering at times he can be hammy.

I was thoroughly engaged in the first half, then when Janney leaves the story became less engaging, which I guess speaks to her presence. I wanted more of her. I too felt like the pacing was off at times. That score felt so overbearing throughout and was jarring when it would pop up. The makeup was a distraction, often, especially in close-ups. All of that may sound like harsh critiques, but they’re mainly just minor personal grievances for me. I’m glad Ray Romano is getting to be in more ~serious~ work between this and The Irishman. Thrilled for him.

I struggle with slotting in Jackman firmly for reasons I have brought up several times before. I am going to have to juggle the TV movie contenders of Jackman, Paul, and Scott for that single contender slot. I would probably lean towards Jackman of the three. But all of their projects have +/- that dont lead to such an extreme to where I feel comfortable ruling one out completely, or ruling one in too, for that matter. I dont have Janney in because with how few lead acting performances in tv movies get nominated, their corresponding supporting partners get in even less than that. Especially with how competitive supporting actress is this year. But if she pops up nomination morning, good for her.

Jackman and Janney both killed with these performances! It remains to be seen if telefilms are viable for any acting Emmy nominations anymore, but I’m penciling in both in my predictions. Made for Television should be easy if it’s campaigned for well. Writing and directing might be harder to achieve. The one disappointment I had here was that the trailer led me to believe that this was going to be a full-on satire of upper-class school politics, but the treatment played it entirely straight down the middle. I guess I’ll have to wait for that in the inevitable college admissions scandal film that’s surely coming in the next five years. The ensemble was more than game to do more. I also liked Stephen Spinella, Ray Romano (gasp!), and the young actress playing the student journalist who cracked the story. Jackman hasn’t been this good in years (though I did like him in “The Frontrunner,” which was completely ignored here). Tassone was messy and problematic AF, and that allowed Jackman much to work with. A longer treatment might have been warranted. This film would have probably quietly premiered and fizzled in theaters, or currently, premiered VOD and fizzled, so I’m glad HBO acquired this property instead.

Watched this a few days ago. Jackman and Janney were AWESOME, both very deserving of nominations. The TV movie actor curse will stand in their way, but lead actor seems empty enough that I think Jackman is making it in. I’m not completely sold on Janney being nominated just yet, but she’s got the quality to deserve it, and the TV Academy LOVES Janney, so I would not be surprised to see her there. I’m considering this as a dark horse in writing as well. Just seems like the kind of thing the writers would go for. Aside from awards chances, though, this was a great movie. Compelling and incisive, and the character work was so well-done.

I love Bad Education. It is a wonderful film worthy to win Best TV Movie. Jackman, Janney, and Romano deserve to get acting nods. Same in directing and writing. I hope it gets a lot of recognition.

    Damn, this was juicy!

The performances are top notch. Jackman, Janney, & Romano deserve nominations.

The story is engaging and drops every scandalous secret like spilt tea.

    4/5.

“you look like your picture, thank god.”

This movie could have been an Oscar contender. The script is very strong, Jackman hasn’t been this good in years. Janney hasn’t made one bad move in her entire career. Very strong ensemble. Shockingly disturbing yet ultimately rewarding experience for a viewer. 5 stars from me.
