There was a thread about this show about two years ago, but its formatting was somewhat odd, so I figured I’d make this thread. Here’s the old thread for those wondering:
It is premiering March 25th on HBO, starring 9-time Emmy nominee and 1-time winner Bill Hader, as well as legend Henry Winkler.
It has gotten pretty good reviews, with an 83 on metacritic as of now with 14 reviews. Verne Gay gave it an abysmal review, but the rest have been quite solid:
I remember that the first few episodes of this show leaked a while back and the reaction from what I could tell was rather poor. Who knows how the end product will be.
Maybe this will be a bigger push for HBO with the absence of Veep.March 22, 2018 at 2:36 pm #1202517794
I am very mixed about this as an Emmy contender. If I had not seen it, I would absolutely be predicting it for series and actor and honestly also would be berating all of you for not taking it seriously when it has strong reviews, people that the Emmys like behind it and will get a decent sampling behind Westworld and Silicon Valley. But having actually seen the first two episodes, I am holding out hope that you all will see what I saw, which is also what Verne Gay saw: “Baffling, dull Barry is a bore and so is the series named for him.” I only saw the first two episodes because that is all that was leaked and I did not request the rest from HBO because I figured that I would have nothing good to write about them. The critics have seen all eight episodes, so the show might get a lot better over the course of the season, but will people stick around? I was excited for it because of the people involved, but it is the worst pilot that I have seen this Emmy cycle—unfunny and contrived. But if none of you agree with that assessment (beyond @hunter-ish, who also watched the leaks), then I will have to bite the bullet and predict it. We have a whole thread for times that the consensus opinion was beyond us and this might be one of those times. I need your thoughts!March 22, 2018 at 2:59 pm #1202517804
I had Hader, but switched to Goodman. I’d rather wait and see what happens. But I don’t think I’ll have anything more than Hader. Series isn’t happening.March 22, 2018 at 3:35 pm #1202517819
I’m shocked by the good reviews. It was a semi-interesting premise but the show was a bore and the characters were absolutely grating. Maybe they made some major editing changes to the first two episodes?March 25, 2018 at 11:37 pm #1202519110
Boring…. I think they did editing changes, the editing was confusing sometimes. Probably, it’s gonna flop.March 26, 2018 at 11:38 am #1202519382
Hader wrote, directed and starred. I am unclear if he lacks the talent for such a task or he surrounded himself with people who wouldn’t tell him the truth about the quality of his output or both.March 27, 2018 at 11:01 pm #1202520179

I don’t think it was unwatchable though nothing Emmy-worthy . I have the same feelings above for Atlanta and it just gets nominated.March 28, 2018 at 11:42 am #1202520498
I LOVED this! The Emmys will eat this up. They love shows about the industry. Whew.March 29, 2018 at 1:00 am #1202520974
The first episode was decent. I like Henry Winkler a lot. This will probably do pretty well with the emmys.April 9, 2018 at 9:27 pm #1202527086
I had such low expectations from the first two episodes, but my roommate is an actor and loves the show, so I watched the third episode. I ended up surprisingly enjoying it. Sarah Goldberg was fantastic. I didn’t like her at first but she killed her material this week. This was a really good episode. Hopefully it stays at the level of this episode.April 9, 2018 at 11:45 pm #1202527169
The third episode was not quite funny, but it was not unfunny like the pilot and the show might be past its initial broad characterization and annoying dialogue.
