This has to be the show to beat for cinematography, right? Also, from what I’ve seen so far, Mbedu, Pierre and Rabe are amazing.

Emmy FYC!!: Chloe Sevigny (We Are Who We Are), MJ Rodriguez (Pose), Billy Porter (Pose), Emma Corrin (The Crown), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Maya Erskine (Pen15), Anna Konkle (Pen15), Naomi Ackie (Master of None), Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown), Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You)

Ok so I watched the first episode and is it just me or is dialogue incredibly hard to understand? I feel like there is some sound issue and it’s really bothering me. I’m watching with good headphones on my laptop but sometimes i have to crank the audio up really high to understand them and then i have to put it back down because some sound will be incredibly loud. Anyone else?

Yeah the background noises are very overpowering sometimes.

I was wondering if that was something off with my television, but yeah, I agree that the sound mix is a bit off at points.

The first episode was off to a good start, even if they chose (for understandable reasons) to elide what I thought was one of the book’s more interesting aspects in the early section.

Jenkins has always been a visually stylish director, and here he’s putting that Bezos money to good use.

When I have the volume higher it works fine, but last night when I was watching after midnight I had to lower the volume of the TV and the I noticed that issue as well.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

I feel like it might of been a stylistic choice to have the sounds higher. Especially during the beginning of ep 1 during the nighttime scenes. Idk, i feel like barry is super hands on that he wouldnt do it accidentally

Finished this last night (well really at 3am). The first episode is practically torture porn and after watching the rest of the show, it really just seemed exploitive to hook viewers in because in no way was the rest of the show was as violent as that first episode (even if it still was violent throughout). At one point I almost shut off the pilot (can imagine many people would do the same and it seems like audience reactions have given as much). But I stuck with it obviously and episode 2 was very Get Out-esque and 3 was a STUNNER. Lily really ran with that episode. The middle episodes focused on Joel’s character were boring for the most part, and Joel is by far amongst the bottom three performers of the show with Dillon and the younger Ridgeway actor, and incredibly one note. His increased character’s focus in episodes 4-6 really brought them down, though 6 had some great moments. I really didn’t understand the acclaim he got. He was just line reading and had no depth (just like his character’s focused episodes).

Then episode 7 hit and really brought this show back back up. Bowman was such a nice focal point and she deserved more screentime than she got. The rest of the show was incredibly beautiful. Amber Gray turned was a stunner for her two episodes (fuming Dillon is being submitted/campaigned but she isn’t when he did absolutely nothing but run around the entire show). I didn’t care that much about William at first but he grew on me. Now Sheila WHEW. By far one of my favorite performances on the show and might be my MVP with Thuso. Wish we had more of her throughout the episodes but it was worth the wait to see her. Now Pierre, I loved him so much in his limited time and he’s kinda my personal winner in the category. You really felt his presence through the rest of the show and you kept wanting more and his final goodbye was heartbreaking. And finally Thuso, she was astonishing. A great breakout performance and she carried this series on her back.

Personally I wouldn’t give this series (and I don’t think it will win anyways), it wasn’t exactly consistent (the middle episodes being a snooze and the pilot I have icky feelings about), but I would give it wins for directing, Pierre, Sheila, and cinematography.

Non-context spoiler but that burning house scene was gorgeously filmed.
