What do you guys think are the best guest performances in TV history?August 10, 2013 at 7:32 pm #294181
Alfre Woodard’s guest appearance in the pilot of L.A.LawAugust 10, 2013 at 7:49 pm #294182
Nancy Walker in the Golden Girls.August 10, 2013 at 8:06 pm #294183
Beatrice Arthur on All In The Family. How many times have someone made a guest appearance and have the network offer them a spin off?August 10, 2013 at 9:56 pm #294184
Cloris Leachman from Malcolm in the Middle.August 10, 2013 at 10:24 pm #294185
Blythe Danner St. Elsewhere

Too bad this category wasn’t around for every ceremony.August 10, 2013 at 10:27 pm #294186
John Larroquette in The Practice. Edward Herrmann, too.
John Lithgow is an obvious choice for his work on Dexter, though one could certainly argue that that was a one-season supporting turn.August 10, 2013 at 10:54 pm #294187
Some of these might qualify as supporting performances, but given that they submitted in Guest at the Emmys, I’m sticking to it. 5 drama performances from the top of my head…
Jimmy Smits, Dexter (2009)
Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights (2010)
John Lithgow, Dexter (2010)
Gregory Itzin, 24 (2010)
Julia Stiles, Dexter (2011)August 12, 2013 at 5:02 am #294188
Peter Boyle (The X-Files)
Moses Gunn (Homicide: Life on the Street)
Richard Kiley (Picket Fences)
Amanda Plummer (The Outer Limits)
Annabella Sciorra (The Sopranos)
Three of the above five actors won Emmys for their guest performances and four were nominated for the award. Not bad. Is it just me or have they gotten a lot worse with the guest categories? Allowing the contractual “guest stars” who are in almost every episode of a season to compete is a problem.August 12, 2013 at 5:38 am #294189
Phillip Baker Hall
I would consider John O’Hurley, Jerry Stiller, and Estelle Harris supporting actors on the show, or else they’d be here.
Weird Al Yankovic
I would also consider Liza Minelli supporting for the seasons on which she appeared, or else she’d be here as well.August 12, 2013 at 7:08 am #294190
Glynn Turman for In Treatment is always the first name that pops into my head.August 12, 2013 at 9:04 am #294191

Betty White – SNLAugust 12, 2013 at 9:33 am #294193
I don’t know what is the very best, but Betty White playing a crazy version of herself on The John Laroquette Show definitely deserves mention.
Ditto Christine Baranski’s Dr. Laura send-up on Frasier.
