Sedgwick might have won in 2010 but the rest of her noms came in the last decade. 5 of The Closer‘s 7 seasons aired in the 2000s so I don’t see why she should be included in this decade’s best, considering she was even barely a part of it.

Close is more reasonable but still, her best years were during the first two seasons of Damages and hence, it’s understandable why she isn’t being mentioned.

I guess I’m just going off people who were actually nominated for consideration here (since some people in the poll weren’t/haven’t been nominated).

But it doesn’t mean those who were nominated/won early shouldn’t be discredited. Yes, Sedgwick won in 2010 and it was such an extremely well-deserved win. And, sure, she stopped getting nominated after win, but she was still excellent throughout. Yes, Close had her strongest material in Seasons 1 & 2, but she deserved all the acclaim for “Damages,” including within this decade.

Not many people have included Connie Britton, as well. I remember being around this forum when she first got nominated and the fanfare was through the roof.

Claire Danes on Homeland is phenomenal, one of the best ever.  Easy choice.

    I’d rank them this way…

    1. Robin Wright
    2. Tatiana Maslaney
    3. Clare Foy
    4. Juliana Marguiles
    5. Clare Danes
    6. Elizabeth Moss
    7. Viola Davis
    8. Jodie Comer
    9. Keri Russell
    10. Carrie Coon

What a hard choice, I have watched all of them (all the seasons of every show) with the exception of Davis (I have watched clips of her on YouTube, but not a single entire episode) think that objectively Maslany, Russell, Moss and Danes changed TV and gave iconic performances, the four of them are on the same level, but I choose Maslany because she gave us 6 iconic characters. I adore Foy, she would be my number five, mostly because she only had two seasons, Margulies is a classy and subtle actress, but her role got repetitive and annoying by the end of the show, so she is 6 (the two Emmy wins that she has are totally deserved though), then Coon, Wright and Comer are a supporting players in comparison with the others, Coon is played beautifully the human desperation and misery, Comer is an incredible actress that can do anything, she may go up in my ranking with future seasons, Wright is the weakest, but I give her credit for making Claire more interesting on screen that she is on paper. From the clips I have seen of Davis I found her terribly theatrical and mistaken in what medium she is actually acting, it is a shame that she is the only black actress here, I hope we see more black actresses in great roles.

I just saw this now but have to push back on that for a second. HTGAWM is like any Shondaland show: The rapid-fire dialogue and the over-the-top speeches practically demand a somewhat theatrical performance, just look at Kerry Washington in Scandal. And maybe you should watch more than just a few clips before diminishing her performance like that, because I can assure you that she can also be raw and subtle. Just watch this clip and you’ll know what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwFCW6czwUQ

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to say you’re wrong or anything, but mere clips on YouTube are not going to give you a full picture of Davis’ portrayal of Annalise on HTGAWM.

Those I have seen, I would say

    1) Tatiana Maslany
    2) Carrie Coon
    3) Julianna Margulies
    4) Jodie Comer
    5) Claire Danes
    6) Robin Wright
    7) Viola Davis

Both Claire Danes and Viola Davis suffer from bad writing, their character became quickly caricatural, and so did their performance.
