Let’s use this forum thread for y’all to explain your pick for supporting comedy actor. I don’t know what to think of that category. Currently, Ty Burrell leads Gold Derby’s official racetrack odds, but Tony Hale and Andre Braugher are very close behind:
Of course, we don’t know yet what episodes they will submit, but we can still do some intelligent noodling …Riley (the normal one, not the one who won the predictions contest)ParticipantJune 20, 2014 at 3:15 pm #320283
For now, I am predicting Andre Braugher because the Emmys love him and they went out of their way to not award Modern Family they did last year. Speaking of which, I only have Ty Burrell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson getting in. If Ferguson really does have a great submission, I might pick him. Tony Hale winning was a fluke last year, so I do not expect him to repeat. I have found that there have been other cases of surprising winners having better material the year after they won and the Emmys not giving them another win. Adam Driver is the best part of Girls, so he should be safe for a nomination. I have no idea what to do with that last slot though. I have Joe Lo Truglio right now because if voters watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he should be nominated. I am also considering Taran Killam since they like Saturday Night Live in these supporting categories, but even if he is the standout on the show these days, does he have as much support at Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Amy Poehler? I am not so sure.June 20, 2014 at 3:15 pm #320284
Andre Braugher was one of my favorite things about this season’s comedy shows, and definely worthy of the prize. After the Critics Choice win, it gives me more hope that he’s solid for a nomination and maybe even a win, but I can’t think of a standout episode that would work for him as a winning tape. I personally find him hillarious, but being the straight men of his show could cause him some trouble, specially being amoung so many loud characters and performances. He is a high-profile name, and the Emmys seems to love the guy, so I’d give him the edge.
Tony Hale isn’t the best supporting actor of the year (he’s not even the best supp. actor of his own show), but he has a great tape in “Crate”. I could see him winning again, since this is a better tape than last year’s “Running”, and it’s just a funny, genuine and loud scene. It sticks with you, it has impact. I would like to see Timothy Simons getting in with him for Veep, since he’s been one of the highlights of a tremendous season, but all I’ve seen is praise for his performances from reviews.
I don’t remember Ty Burell having many choices of submission this year, despite being always great on the show. Jesse Tyler Ferguson is the most competitive of the Modern Family men, with two or three possible submissions. Both have locked spots in the category, in my opinion. There’s a question mark above Eric Stonestreet’s head, cause he’s had a good season but the snub last year could mean they are done with this character. I wouldn’t put O’Neill in the race, I find him the weak link of the male performers, but he has the kinda buzzed about arc between Jay and Mitchell.
Adam Driver was the best thing about Girls this year (although I haven’t finished the season yet), but I don’t think he’s made a good impression with his tape last year, and I definely don’t see him making the cut if they decide to continue giving MF 3 spots.
RIght now, my predictions are:
1. Andre Braugher
2. Tony Hale
3. Jesse Tyler Ferguson
4. Ty Burell
5. Eric Stonestreet
6. Timothy SimonsRiley (the normal one, not the one who won the predictions contest)ParticipantJune 20, 2014 at 3:35 pm #320285
Less than a hundred people served on the panel that saw Driver’s tape last year though. It should not affect a popular vote by members in the thousands.
Andre Braugher does not have a slam-dunk episode, but I think that his Andre Braugher-style performance will help overcome that. I broke down his best options in an article and ran a poll.
Remember last year when Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor were favoured for nominations and we thought that David Cross was a possibility? 🙁 The Gold Derby odds actually only got two right in this category last year because of Max Greenfield. Many also thought that Simon Helberg would break in after his Critics’ Choice win.June 20, 2014 at 4:06 pm #320286
I don’t even have Ty Burell in my predictions, if they could snub Stonestreet then why not Burell? He won once back in 2011. JTF, then Ed O Neil then Stonestreet are safe. They’re the ones with character development and major storylines focusing on them. I’m predicting Matt Walsh from Veep as he’s an empathetic character much like Tony Hale’s Gary, and now we know just how much support Veep has in the acting branch. As for the rest a Braugher is safe, Hale too. I’m just torn between Stonestreet and Driver for last place. Also I’m wondering whether we’re underestimating an SNL supporting actor or even Jason Biggs if OITNB love is big.June 20, 2014 at 4:17 pm #320287
All 4 MF actors are getting in for me, plus Andre Braugher and Tony Hale. I’d love to have the balls to predict Timothy Simons or Matt Walsh, but I’m not as of now. I think Stonestreet, JTF and O’Neill have had too good a season to be snubbed, but I’m now thinking of jumping on this Ty Burrell Snub bandwagon… Hmm…. Can someone else weigh in on this?Riley (the normal one, not the one who won the predictions contest)ParticipantJune 20, 2014 at 4:31 pm #320288
Ty Burrell just won SAG, so he is as popular or more than ever and should do very well in the popular vote.June 20, 2014 at 4:36 pm #320289
See, in that case, I just feel the 4 MF dudes are too solid to pass over, this season anyway. I know people want to believe that the Emmys are going to magically forget them, but I would imagine we’ll see 3 if not all of them on Emmy nom day.June 20, 2014 at 4:49 pm #320290
I think this year is going to be Ed O’Neil, JTF, or Eric Stone street. I’m rooting for O’Neil and JTF though. They were my mvps all season and desrve emmys.
1)Ed O’Neil: He was my pick last year and most likely this year but he has had a great season
2) JTF: He was great all season.
3) Eric Stonestreet: He had some great moments this season and just is always dependable to do great work
4) Ty Burrell: Love him on the show but I cannot think of any hilarious moments from him this season. He had a great season though.
5)Tony Hale: The returning champ has been equally as great and deserves a nomination)
6) Max Greenfield: He was stellar all seasonJune 20, 2014 at 4:58 pm #320291
I think it will most likely be another MF Emmy win in this category. For the year that’s in it, it could very well be JTF or O’Neill’s time.June 20, 2014 at 5:12 pm #320292
Right now I think Braugher is going to win this. The voters love him and he has an episode where he gives a speech.June 20, 2014 at 6:04 pm #320293

And Burrell became the first and only person to beat Alec Baldwin and stop his winning streak from going to 8. That’s gotta count for something. Baldwin had plenty of scandals before his eventual loss and yet his streak continued until then.June 20, 2014 at 6:26 pm #320295
I think the fact that 30 Rock was old news at that point (literally a full year had passed) and that only 5 episodes were eligible was the reason Baldwin lost, not necessarily the strength of Burell.June 20, 2014 at 6:32 pm #320296
Andre Braugher will probably win, they love him at the Emmys & he’s the best thing about B99. I also figure that the MF guys will all make it back in again, I don’t think the Emmys has as high a degree of MF fatigue as we think.
1) Andre Braugher
2) Tony Hale
3) Ty Burrell
4) Ed O’Neil
5) Eric Stonestreet
