I hate to admit it but I actually think the show suffers from the lack of Vallee’s guidance. Arnold is doing her best to ape his style but it’s clear that it doesn’t come naturally to her.

Ha, some of the early observations make much more sense now. Poor Arnold. It seems like they only used her to say”the acclaimed indie female director will helm the new season of our acclaimed female-led show”. They could have definitely picked a lesser known director if “correcting” their choices was their plan all along.

What a mess … How do you guys think this will affect the show in Emmy 2020?

I think it’s too early to tell, but even before this article, I had this feeling that, while still obviously good in many aspects, the show oddly loses steam?

TV year is long and a lot of stuff can eventually overshadow not only this show but also some members of the cast.

This will 100% hurt the show’s Emmy chances. It just lost Best Drama. HBO and everyone involved repeated many times that this is show that puts women at the center, and now a woman’s creative choices were removed and blocked by men.

I think the show should be very glad it’s airing now instead of next Spring. This is the kind of narrative that could have killed its Emmy chances. It now has plenty of time to recover.

I’m just surprised people thought/think it would win drama series. I mean, it’ll be up there, maybe the runner up but I think The Crown would need to flop hard.

I didn’t think it was winning, but I think its chances are now close to dead. You can be sure Netflix or someone else will make this story reappear next year. And we could also get an interview from Andrea Arnold explaining her side of the story and trashing HBO and the producers.

Every season being different and having its own voice would have been great. They should have just stuck with Arnold’s personal style instead of giving us this disjointed mess. Anyway all this drama is far more interesting and exciting than the season itself.

Honestly, between this and Marti Noxon complaining about the filming of Sharp Objects, I just hope JMV stays away from TV in the future and starts directing silent movies if his intention is to have as little dialogue as possible.

Olivia would need to turn into a serial murder or something. She looks very happy with her Oscar, so no killings

Shameful. Poor Arnold. I don’t think that Kelley or Vallée would have steamrolled the artistic “vision” of a man. And conversely, if the sympathy factor for Arnold is played up next year, she might be a director Emmy frontrunner, which might not have been the case previously. This doesn’t change how competitive “Big Little Lies” is in Drama Series next year, which it is getting in for regardless, or its acting contenders, who this shouldn’t affect either since it doesn’t involve them. It affects Vallée the most for the next gig as a huge reputation bruise.

This also reflects kind of poorly on Witherspoon and Kidman. It looks bad for them if they knew this was going on and it looks bad for them if they didn’t know which kind of suggests their EP status is a vanity title.

It should go without saying that the fault and blame should be directed to Vallee and Kelly and not at Witherspoon and Kidman. I am just pointing out that they do not have immunity from backlash.

How incredibly shameful. Arnold deserves so much better. I don’t have much to say that hasn’t already been said here or on Twitter, but this is just terrible.

Here’s the major ways that I think it’ll affect Emmy chances:

Technical awards are out the window.

It can kiss a writing nomination goodbye too. Even though his name won’t be on the ballot, Kelley’s obvious influence is too big to ignore.

I don’t think it was really ever going to win series, but it definitely won’t now.

Andrea Arnold could win directing as a consolation prize. I wouldn’t be confident in saying that she will, but she’s definitely in the top two or three now.

Kidman and Witherspoon probably didn’t have a chance at winning, but they definitely won’t now. They’re not as explicitly blamed as Vallée or Kelley, but having their names as producers won’t look good for them.

Dern, Woodley, Streep, and Scott are still fine. And I don’t see this pushing Kravitz up or down.
