In hindsight, I found season two to follow a similar end goal from the first season.

In season 1, I expected to be surprised by who had been killed or shocked at the reveal; but the storytelling, narrative, performances and masterful work the series showcased left me not even the slightest bit disappointed with how blatantly obvious it was that Perry was Jane’s attacker and the person who would die.

Season 2 set us up to think that Quinlan would be forcing one of the women to crack and turn on the others because of these huge stakes; it ended up being about a mother fighting to keep what was left of her family. The “investigation” didn’t take priority of the plot, much like the death from season 1. I was initially disappointed by this, but with time passed I actually appreciate that the angle they took.

The first half of season 2 is just fantastic (I personally think better than episodes of the first). Even with all of the criticism and dirt that people tossed on BLL, you can’t tell me there was anything on television that even came close to touching it. Yes, Ozark is GREAT, Killing Eve is GREAT, The Crown is GREAT, Succession is GREAT and so on and so on and so on…I don’t think any of them are a cut above Big Little Lies. Different, yes, but objectively “better”? Nothing.

If they return for a season 3 and let’s face it, they will; I just think HBO need to not screw up the release time for the sake of awards.

Okay it’s one thing to have your favorites, but given the season’s response, I think it’s very easy for people to say other shows surpassed, as many users on here already have.

I love it, I love it, I love it, but I also have my problems with it.

Nicole Kidman is amazing in Moulin Rouge!

The film won the Golden Globe and the PGA for Best Motion Picture

I still have to say this again but Kidman missing was absolutely criminal. Her work this season was just as excellent as it was in season 1 and she would have been a very worthy winner.

I mean I love The Crown but at SAG I’d have swapped Colman out for her in a heartbeat.

I wonder if the only Globe+Emmy nominee for S2 is interested.

Nicole Kidman has been promoting “The Undoing” and said the cast want to work together again and that Moriarty and Kelley have a good idea for the third season.

The excuse that had been tossed around about “schedule” problems is just them stalling. When they get the structure for the season set, it will be a priority project for all of them. Big Little Lies isn’t a launching pad to other things, the stars were all at the height of their professions before they did it. Returning to a beloved and massively successful show whenever they feel like it will not be something they need to “work out”. So yeah, I’d be surprised if we don’t hear an announcement pretty soon.

Productions are all starting up again soon. Kidman will be finishing “Nine Perfect Strangers” in the coming months and Witherspoon will be resuming “The Morning Show” very shortly. By the summer, they could feasibly be ready to start a third season of BLL if the scripts and practicalities begin to take shape.

I hope they don’t cover Covid like Kidman said she wanted to in her roundtable interview. I mean don’t get me wrong I don’t mind those types of topical inclusions but it would make absolutely no sense in Big Little Lies. It would be like covering AIDs in Colombo it just makes no sense for the format of the show.

Although fingers crossed if they do a third season that they get a better director and that Kidman gets back into the Lead Actress lineup. I love Sandra Oh and Olivia Colman but I either would have had the same lineup with 7 nominees or I would have taken her over one of those two.

Not here for the Arnold shade. She is a very capable director who was fucked over by HBO and the producers of the show. It’s not her fault how the season turned out.

What they actually need to do is not go behind the backs of people they themselves approached in the first place.

Well Arnold is a great director and her work was great but I mean at least makes sure the person who’s directing ends up directing the episode in the style of the show. Which yes as you said was partly the producers and HBO’s fault.

I mean when you get David Fincher to direct Mindhunter, Jodie Foster to direct Orange is the New Black or Mimi Leder to direct The Morning Show it’s not as if they direct it as something that isn’t the style of the show they’re directing.

Will say though that Arnold should have been nominated for Tell-Tale Hearts regardless because that episode was phenomenally directed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if HBO is the one pushing them to find an idea to do it. After all, it remains their highest rated show (at least in linear ratings) since GoT, nothing has surpassed it and it has been more than a year.

Regarding the director, I think what happened with s2 made it clear a continuation won’t happen without Jean-Marc Vallée, and I doubt anyone else would sign unto the project after Arnold’s treatment anyway.

Arnold is an amazing director, she shits all over Jean-Marc
