I’m one of the very few people who thinks that my beloved Kristen Wiig has a shot at upsetting in the movie/miniseries actress category on Monday night & will finally take home her long overdue Emmy statuette. She’s 100% the apple in a bag of oranges here, with a broad, bold, hilarious comedic performance in an unusual ‘miniseries’ of sorts. Most of the other actors have too many things working against them. I don’t see Tyson winning this (sorry), Lange and Paulson are old news, Driver and Bonham Carter don’t have any buzz, leaving Wiig who was denied several Emmys in years past for her role on SNL, and who got a shocker nomination this year for Spoils of Babylon… If people watch all of these movies/series, they could think of Wiig’s performance as a breath of fresh air in a group of big, dark, dramatic, depressing performances. This is a gigantic limb, and I’m standing on it firmly.August 23, 2014 at 9:14 am #328319
You’re not alone. I’m in the same boat.August 23, 2014 at 9:31 am #328320
I have her in second place and I’m so close to predicting her but I just think there’s too much love for Tyson in the industry, Lifetime bias aside. However, I think Wiig has A LOT of fans in the industry and she’s really branching out and working with a lot of people and I see voters wanting to vote for her not only because they like her but because the performance is so different from the others and a real discovery, assuming voters didn’t watch The Spoils of Babylon previously (which they probably didn’t).
Plus, as you said, it would be overdue. This is actually her seventh nomination in six years, which is crazy.August 23, 2014 at 9:46 am #328321
I know we keep referring to the Phylicia Rashad thing with Raisin, but I have to bring this up once again. Rashad was also beloved in the industry, and won a Tony for that role, and was maybe considered a real frontrunner also because of her previous status as a comedy icon with The Cosby Show… But Tyson simply does not stand out for me in this bunch. Wiig is, as you say, really branching out lately, and is very admirable for choosing to do very different, diverse projects, working with different people in the industry as opposed to sticking to the same old shtick… She’s a real threat here, I think, and I’m sticking with her.August 23, 2014 at 10:42 am #328322
I hope so. I loved Spoils of Babylon, and if she won, I would be incredibly happy.

Tyson might still win, bit I won’t be surprised if Wiig wins. I still don’t know, but we’ll have wait and see.August 23, 2014 at 11:27 am #328324
I hope Lange wins…..August 23, 2014 at 11:30 am #328325
I have to agree… she was very good in SoB. I was going with Tyson, but only because I thought it was the safe thing to do. But performance-wise, I have to say this was the most enjoyable one, for me. So completely different than any of the others, in a very good way. And it would be insanely good if she won. It would bring the house down. I’m changing my prediction. Thanks for making me think about it a little more.August 23, 2014 at 11:36 am #328326
Can you imagine the reaction if Wiig won? The roar would be tumultuous.August 23, 2014 at 12:16 pm #328327
That would be something. I kinda want it to happen nowAugust 23, 2014 at 12:19 pm #328328
She has her best shot this year, as all of her previous noms were for SNL (unless I’m miscounting something) and we all know performers don’t fare well there in supporting categories… This is a leading performance in a leading category. If this were a comedy category, I would even say others may be ahead of her, but here, I’m crossing my fingers.August 23, 2014 at 12:55 pm #328329
No. Sticking with Tyson.
Monday night can’t come soon enough.August 23, 2014 at 1:03 pm #328330
Although i do want Lange to win i feel like Wiig has a good shot. She’s kind of like Ricky Gervais. They both were surprise nominees and now they are threats to win.August 23, 2014 at 1:08 pm #328331
I would LOVE if it happened but I’m sticking with Tyson, Lange, and even an upset from Carter then Wiig. I might switch those twoAugust 23, 2014 at 2:18 pm #328332
As someone who watched the TV Movies for the first time, I am stunned at the notion Tyson is the lock. Is it because she won the Tony? Different set of nominees here. Different medium.
I’d rank her around 4th in this field based on performance. Bountiful was a rather forgettable TV movie, very clunky and stagey with not much genuine emotion behind it. She didn’t come close to the heights of Geraldine Page so it all felt sort of underwhelming.
My faith in Emmy voters is at an all time low after last year, but if they vote on performance this should easily be going to either Minnie Driver or Kristen Wiig. But I have no faith they will do the right thing after last years rather absurd ceremony of winners. Perhaps the fact she is Cicely Tyson in a Tony winning role will be enough, but man do I feel on another planet with this performance being a lock. One of the reasons I liked the Emmys over the Oscars is because they would usually ignore outside hype and vote on performance.
