One of the hottest Emmy battles this year will be the repeat of the fight that began last year: Chris Colfer vs. the men of Modern Family.
Round 1 went to Modern Family, but who do you think will take Round 2?
Keep in mind that with breakout Parks star Nick Offerman and two-time (both last year) Emmy winner and Tony host Neil Patrick Harris are also in contention for this category, as well as TV vets such as Oliver Platt, Jon Cryer, Rainn Wilson and others.
Also remember that Chris Colfer was snubbed by the critics (and the Modern Family men weren’t), but also remember that Colfer won the Golden Globe. It may also help to remember that neither Colfer nor a Family man won the SAG Award from their peers.June 12, 2011 at 3:17 am #221917
As for Colfer’s Globe win, I think the Globe means less related. Chloe Sevigny, Sandra Oh, Kim Cattrall, all won Globes but didn’t win (and in the case of Sevigny, not even nominated for the Emmy.) Plus, we all know that the HFPA has a hard on for Glee. I don’t read cases seeing Glee and Lynch being fronrunners especially that they also won the Globes like Colfer do.
I think that another MF guy will win this year (preferrably Burrell) though Neil patrick Harris will be very. competitive especially if he submits Legendaddy.June 12, 2011 at 4:02 am #221918
Impossible to say until we know who’s nominated and find out what they submit. The “Modern Family” men, however many of them make it in (at least two seems to be a safe bet) will have the benefit of appearing in multiple episodes, so the right combination of tapes could easily push one or all of them ahead of Colfer.
But I wouldn’t consider the Globe win to be an important factor. The Globes may be relevant in terms of buzz (they can put someone on the radar who might not have been before), but after the nominees are announced, who won the Globe doesn’t mean much (just ask Teri Hatcher or Julianna Margulies).June 12, 2011 at 5:55 am #221919
^ That’s a very good point with the multiple men from one show nominated. If you have a good submission, and has a good storyline on other costar’s submission as well, that’ll play a lot for you.
Do they still cut off submissions for Supporting categories? Or it’s just the Guest categories?June 12, 2011 at 8:45 am #221920
I’m calling it now, if Offerman sneaks his way into a nomination — he wins. The buzz is hurting my ears. (AND I LOVE IT)
Colfer should win awards for being ridiculously overrated. The Golden Globes are fun, but they’re a joke…I don’t think that win will hold any weight when it comes to the Emmys, to be honest.
There’s no question that the men of Modern Family will dominate the category…and if one of them gets the win (which I don’t want, but it’ll be fine), it should be Burrell.June 12, 2011 at 1:01 pm #221921
No they don’t edit episodes anymore they just take the episode in it’s entirety.
As for the Chris Colfer vs. Modern Family guys I think it’s going to have at least two modern family guys nominated and I think that if Ty is nominated and submits well then I think he’ll win.June 12, 2011 at 9:25 pm #221922
I agree with what was said earlier. If anybody from Modern Family wins, it will be Burrell. But I also think that Offerman has the biggest chance of winning if he is nominated.June 12, 2011 at 10:17 pm #221923
Yeah, I say ideally this race is between Burrell, Offerman, and Harris, but who the hell knows what will happen. BUT, as much as Colfer can be just way too much with the crying, etc., it could do well with an episode where he has a lighter storyline that’s more fun and funny (Duets, Silly Love Songs?) It’s not like he’s hurting for airtime in almost any episode, so he’s got a lot to choose from. I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see him miss out on a nomination, though.June 13, 2011 at 12:21 am #221924
With everything Kurtcentric that Ryan Murphy did in Season 2, I bet he’ll have a nervous breakdown if Colfer is snubbed.
I don’t see it happening because if anything, his buzz gained this year. However, I think he needs a “light” tape and stay away from the Grilled Cheesus, Never Been Kissed, or the Prom episodes because I don’t think he’ll stand a chance against the Burrells, and the Harrises, and the Offermans if he submits a dramatic episode.June 13, 2011 at 11:45 pm #221925
Nick Offerman could certainly win. He’s got a great tape (“Ron & Tammy: Part II”). It’ll likely be funnier than anything Colfer submits (“Grilled Cheesus,” which I’ve heard the most about, sounds like a strictly dramatic submission if that’s what he goes with), and funnier than any single episode from the “Modern Family” guys, though a combination of “Modern” episodes could propel one of them to victory. So, in other words, a wide-open race where it’s hard to declare anyone a frontrunner until the nominees are announced and the submissions are revealed.June 14, 2011 at 6:14 am #221926
I think there’s eight contenders fighting for the six slots. The MF men, NPH, Chris Colfer, Oliver Platt, and Nick Offerman.
As of now, I am saying the lineup will be the same lineup as last year, but w/Nick Offerman getting Jon Cryer’s spot.
Like w/all of the races it will all come down to the reels. Colfer has frontrunner status, but if Nick Offerman gets in, WATCH OUT!June 14, 2011 at 5:03 pm #221927
If Oliver Platt gets in, he’s going to be the filler nominee that won’t win, even if he submits a good episode (like Jane Krakowski in Supporting Comedy Actress last year).June 15, 2011 at 3:46 am #221928
I can’t even think of a good submission for Platt. Maybe the birthday episode? So instead of wasting a space for him, just nominate Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who is very deserving indeed).June 15, 2011 at 5:31 pm #221929
I wouldn’t think of Platt as a filler nominee. I think his chances of winning aren’t great (or even good), but he was one of the better things about “The Big C” for me. My favorite supp. actor from “TBC” though is John Benjamin Hickey, who unfortunately isn’t even being discussed. (sidenote: I saw him last night in ‘The Normal Heart’ and it blew my mind.)
Of the ‘Modern Family’ men, Burrell is the most deserving of the win. To be honest, Stonestreet and Ferguson each were pretty underwhelming for me this year. I’d give nods to Burrell & O’Neill and that’s all.
Colfer is a shoe-in nominee obviously, and he should go with “Born This Way”. It has a bit of everything for him. I don’t find him funny, but he is pretty great in that episode.
Offerman SHOULD make this list (he’s the most likely of my hopefuls). Donald Glover ABSOLUTELY SHOULD make this list. Justin Kirk SHOULD make this list after being snubbed for 5 seasons of ‘Weeds’ (never gonna happen I know). John Krasinski should’ve made this list many times by now.
