The Hsu talk is to me just evidence of how damn frustrating this check off-voting system is…she was perfectly serviceable, but the literal fourth best supporting female performance on a show doesn’t need buzz, especially when Yvonne Oriji or Hiam Abbas or D’Arcy Carden or other actual scene stealers get overlooked bc they’re not on a mammoth. It’s Sophie Turner and Fiona Shaw over Rhea Seehorn all over again.

    He’s just not a lock.

He’s Jason Alexander. He who must be namechecked.

    Finished your quote 😀

    That is fake news.

As mentioned, last year, it was HULU who broadcast the show’s last 6 episodes of season 3. The only show that Netflix has propped up like a crutch in the manner it has was Schitt’s. Nobody else.

The vast majority of people I know watch the show as it releases on Netflix. Not a coincidence that the Emmys really picked up the show after its best season (season two) premiered there. The buzz around the finale was strong as it aired, but it’ll be even stronger once it hits streaming.

This isn’t an attack on the show at all. It’s just natural that less people are watching weekly broadcast television and more are picking up things once they hit streaming, where they can be easily binged and you don’t have to wait a week for twenty minutes of content with ads. The CW’s All American had extremely low ratings and was likely a target to be cancelled before becoming a number one hit on Netflix, which undoubtedly saved it for a renewal. The Office and Friends would not even be close to the cultural phenomenons they are now with young people without streaming. The streaming bump is real, and it doesn’t say anything about the quality of a show that more eyes just happen to be watching Netflix than network. Schitt’s and TGP have both benefited significantly from that bump, and that’s okay. Whatever puts more eyes on amazing content that deserves to be appreciated is fine by me.

Jason Alexander isn’t a lock. Yes, he’s a big name, very overdue, and he gives a strong performance, but he’s already got two costars ahead of him. Like Kirby won this category last year and he’s just as amazing as ever, and Zachary Levi will benefit from being a major role last season that’s made eligibility this time. That, and he also has a big, fantastic scene where he gets to show off both his comedic and dramatic chops.

Theres a lot more talk and love for those two, so the only way Alexander makes it in is if both of them due. There’s also Eddie Murphy who’s a lock, so Alexander is at best fourth place. I definitely can see him making the cut, but he’s not a lock, and the idea that his name will get him in is definitely wrong, cause he couldn’t get in for his much more acclaimed work in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I don’t think his name can only get him in but we saw last year how in one of the most competitive years in this category that Rufus Sewell got in for doing far less. We know actors love Maisel more than Curb Your Enthusiasm so I don’t see how he misses for people like Jon Hamm or even Dustin Milligan or Victor Garber.

With this being such a weak year I think he is getting in, however I agree that at the moment he isn’t higher than fourth. I change my statement from him being a lock to extremely likely.

Wanda Sykes is definitely a lock though.

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

I agree with some of this, but I’ll say that Rufus Sewell probably had about the same amount to do as Alexander. Their roles were somewhat similar (both of their respective big scenes are them giving speeches that are meant to impact and change the main cast member listening to them), but as I said, Alexander has bigger internal competition. Rufus only had to deal with one fan favorite stealing votes, while Alexander has two.

I will agree that Maisel is clearly more popular than Curb Your Enthusiasm when it comes to actor, something I meant to acknowledge in my initial post. However, Jon Hamm is a bigger Emmy favorite than Alexander, and I think Milligan will benefit from being a major character in previous seasons who just so happens to be guest eligible this time (sort of like Levi, although he was never a main cast member), something that constantly helps people make the cut. I haven’t seen Milligan’s season yet, so I can’t speak for his performance.

On the topic of Schitt’s Creek’s final season, I’m really praying it hits Netflix soon, cause I’m getting impatient.

With an unlimited ballot Alexander is not going to be disadvantaged by the fact Levi and Kirby are also competing, especially when he is near the top of the ballot for some voters.

I’m not confident in saying Hamm is such a big Emmy favourite that he gets in any time he is eligible. After all he only received one nomination for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt when he could have gotten two other noms.

Schitt’s season 5 not having hit Netflix yet is what is making me hesitant about predicting Milligan.

I assume that many voters are lazily waiting for it to show up on Netflix, but might be worth pointing out or reminding that they do have free access to it.  I watched the complete season and the special on the Viacom FYC website.

But are some voters that tech savvy?

Does it require much more tech saviness than watching something on Netflix?

LMAO at Avenue 5 being promoted before Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The lack of Silicon Valley there seems like the final nail in that coffin. Even HBO realizes they won’t get much with it. Gonna switch it out for Schitt’s in directing now.

And yay for Insecure’s big presence there! Seems like HBO is realizing where its biggest assets lie.

Interesting how Run was the first show on the list. Feels like they may feel as if they have to promote it because it’s new and Wever and PWB are such hot names right now. Same with Avenue 5.
