The Golden Globes and the SAG Awards have already pushed their ceremonies to February and March due to the pandemic. But given the current surge in Los Angeles and the expected post- holiday surges, I’m beginning to think it will still be unsafe to hold in-person ceremonies in February or March. The slow, bungled rollout of the vaccine in the U.S. hasn’t given me much optimism either.
Does the HFPA or SAG have a back-up plan at this point?
ReplyDecember 31, 2020 at 8:42 am #1203954817I believe SAG have hinted they are open to a virtual ceremony. I assume the Globes will either change location or go for an Emmy style ceremony (although not even that looks so safe).
Bigger question. What will happen to the Oscars? I am assuming the Emmys will be in-person (unless they decide to permanently go virtual) because there will probably have been a large vaccine rollout by then.

December 31, 2020 at 9:43 am #1203954936Hadn’t heard about SAG possibly going virtual, but I think it makes sense. The Globes may have to set the tone for the first half of the year, since I believe they’re the first major ceremony.
I was also wondering about the Oscars, but didn’t bring them up since this is the TV forums.
Hopefully the Biden administration will be able to kick things into gear with vaccine distribution, but the reports released yesterday about current vaccination rates were…bleak.

Um.
People think that we might have normal Globe and SAG ceremonies? I have not given that any thought.

I think some will do the combination of in person and virtual and some will go completely virtual. For example I strongly feel that BAFTA film and the Oscars will do the former (as some talk shows have been doing) whilst SAG and the Globes might go completely virtual.
We won’t have a proper in person ceremony until the Emmys earliest.

December 31, 2020 at 6:32 pm #1203955740I could see the globes being out of LA or California altogether. I can also see them doing a hybred like the emmys. They are lucky their award show takes place at a hotel. Realisticly, They can have most of the nominnes stay at the hotel rooms and still have the show in the ballroom

For example Miranda Lambert & her husband were at one table, and then Luke Combs and his wife would be at the next one (socially distanced). The Oscars could work like this with only nominees, their guest(s) & the presenters in attendance.

There’s also speculation that attending the CMAs is what killed Charley Pride…
