The Crown wins casting → Homeland/Ozark wins directing

    lol, what?

This is dumb. Why are there so many Crown haters on here? Yes, there have been times where casting didn’t equal a directing win, but in the last couple of years, they coincide. Why couldn’t the Crown win directing if it wins casting? In 2018, it is much more likely it won out of merit than last year’s Bateman win due to a vote-split. And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t The Crown beat Ozark in directing that year? If it wins casting, it’ll probably be the frontrunner for directing. I don’t know how people can’t see this. Directors vote on casting too.

STUNT COORDINATION FOR A COMEDY OR VARIETY PROGRAM
    Ballers

I don’t think Brooklyn Nine-Nine or Shameless is going to repeat on Stunts. I’m predicting they’ll reward Ballers‘ last season, but I confess that I’m definitely not confident about it.

They usually don’t go with the obvious choices in main title theme music, that’s why I didn’t pick Carnival Row or Hollywood. Wu-Tang: An American Saga music IMO is so baity to the branch, that’s why I picked it over the other nominees.

As someone who predicted The Crown‘s win for directing last time (since July that year) when 96% of Gold Derby did not, I reserve the right not to predict it this time. That 96% included Rachel, all of the other editors, all of the top-24/all-star users and all of the Experts until the Creative Arts (one of them switched after). But sure, I am a dumb hater.

I am going to continue stressing that people are putting way too much weight on Aberfan being the biggest spectacle. That didn’t win Game of Thrones the Emmys in 2018 and ’19. It didn’t win Maisel or Barry the Emmy last year. There are other factors that play into this.

I don’t think anyone called you a dumb hater. It’s just strange that you think Succession and Ozark are winning directing if they win casting but not The Crown.

I think he means that The Crown lacks passion and I agree with him. None of us completely understands the casting wins (many different branches vote on them), for example, we have already seen how Stranger Thing won it, but it never won something really big after that. So he means that if one of the two big favorites manages to win a difficult award like this, it seals the deal, while if The Crown wins, it just means an even bigger competition between the two favorites, so a bigger split of awards between them.

Directors are the biggest branch when it comes to vote for Casting and they love The Crown. I also would wait until tonight to say The Crown doesn’t have any passion. The same could also be said for Ozark considering it lost two categories last night that a lot of people were predicting.

But I see your point and I respect your opinion.

I know that you did not, but “lol, what? This is dumb. Why are there so many Crown haters on here?” is a response above to a quoted post of mine.

This doesn’t make any sense at all. So if Succession or Ozark win Casting, they both win directing. But if The Crown wins casting, It can’t win directing?! Can someone explain this logic?!

I do not see The Crown as strong enough to win directing, but I acknowledge that Ozark and Succession might be weak enough to lose casting. It does not sit that well that they both lost to Game of Thrones last year, given that Game of Thrones had lost the previous season, went on to lose directing and had no basis for a win on merit. That Succession was a new show that had won DGA and won writing should have positioned it well and that Ozark had won CSA and won directing and an acting award should have positioned it well, so there is a chance that these two are just disproportionately weak in this race. I can also see The Crown being disproportionately strong in casting, since they have a whole new cast (and won last time against heavy competition).

Have people ever considered the possibility that directors can also differentiate between casting and directing? Sure, they go hand in hand sometimes, but maybe it’s just a coincidence? That’s how we got the Stranger Things and Handmaid’s split in 2017, I think.

After they awarded the weakest nominee last year, I stopped considering that. However, there are always exceptions, it is true that the Stranger Things win looks to be on merit.

I think When They See Us is another example of this: casting lots of virtually unknown, talented actors (among some well-used larger names) is a genuine achievement. It makes sense that it could win Casting on merit without Directing or Series (pretty sure I predicted both WTSU and Stranger Things for Directing, but that’s the advantage of hindsight).

I’m not sure directors can always tell the difference though. At least in film, I think some of the recent unexpected nominees at DGA and the Oscars can be explained partly by a desire to recognise the achievement of working with a young newcomer: Benh Zeitlin, Lenny Abrahamson, Garth Davis, even Taika this year.

Can we lay this Succession x Ozark thing to rest if the former wins casting? Yesterday it was Ozark needs to win editing, then Succession wins and now it is, if Ozark wins casting, it’s taking series.

The only race that is up for grabs is comedy series. Limited and drama ended two months ago.
