Drama side Series winners would be: The Twilight Zone Seasons 1 and 2. The Americans Season 6. The Sopranos for Seasons 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, and 6B. 24 Season 1. House Season 1. The X-Files Season 3. Friday Night Lights Season 5.

Drama side Series nominees would be: The Americans Seasons 3, 4, 5, and 6. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 4. The Wire Seasons 3 and 5. Battlestar Galactica Seasons 3 and 4.

Comedy side Series winners would be: Master of None Seasons 1 and 2. The Office Season 3. 30 Rock Seasons 2, 3, and 7. Malcolm in the Middle Seasons 1 and 2. The Larry Sanders Show Season 6. Seinfeld Seasons 3 and 4. Arrested Development Seasons 1 and 2.

Comedy side Series nominees would be: Community Season 3. Catastrophe Season 1. Parks and Recreation Season 4.

I waited until the Emmys to “START” this thread if you know what I mean, and now that the winners have been announced I cannot help but finally ask if in always doing their homework with so much TV watching, have the writers branch unintentionally picked better nominee lineups and program winners than have been rewarded in the actual Series categories? Some of those also won and were nominated for Series, but not that many.

It sure looks that way to me for the most part. What do you all think? Does the Emmys’ writers branch have a more credible and deserving lineup (taking individual episode submissions out of it) of program winners and nominees for TV seasons that the Emmy have in their Series categories? Yes or no, and why?

Right now the vote is 3 yes and 2 no. I wish I could see who was voting for what, besides my obvious yes vote.

I honestly thought this thread would be a lot more popular to comment on and analyze.

Writers actually watch TV. so of course they often make the right decisions. Sure they awarded shit like GOT’s “bad pussy” episode but they can be forgiven for doing the right thing more often.

Program choices were better five times; writing choices were better nine times.  “START” was better than Game of Thrones season 6, but Game of Thrones season 7 was better than The Americans season 6. I included limited/movie last year because Black Mirror definitely would have lost in a combined category.

Put the last seven episodes of The Americans up against the seven-episode season of Game of Thrones and this tips in The Americans‘ favour.  But my goodness, nothing happened in those early episodes.  I could not believe that they were part of a final season.

The argument ¨nothing happened¨ is so weak, many things happened, many stories were in development which helped created the last 6 episodes being so tense and full of big revelations and huge emotional moments. Also, characters had real conversations with great dialogues in those early episodes, which is a great way of tell a story. Season 7 of GoT does not even deserve to be in the same category as season 6 of The Americans if we are going to talk about writing quality.

Just for the record, I thought the first few episodes of The Americans Season 6 were pretty entertaining, mostly because of the dialogue and impressively subtle performances. It was setting up the season’s arcs, I got that and I liked it. I would still rather re-watch Game of Thrones Season 7 because I am a bigger fan of that show and of those characters in general. TA S6 was my 2nd favorite of the Drama Series nominees while GoT S7 was my #1 favorite which thankfully for me pulled it off. Also, Riley’s own subjective opinions cannot be “false,” so respect his right to his own tastes. I think that is fair.

The season premiere was better than any season 7 GOT episode. And even if we take your argument, the complete disparity in quality between GOT and the ‘last seven episodes’ of The Americans means that it’s obviously a better winner.

Game of Thrones Season 7 had the better directing and cinematography but The Americans Season 6 had the better writing and acting for the most part. Now, back to the topic of this thread, “Do Emmy Writing winners make better Series winners than actual Series winners?” That also includes nominees you know! Imagine 2 seasons of The Wire and Battlestar Galactica being Series nominees? Imagine a Buffy the Vampire Slayer season as a nominee? There’s a lot to debate and discuss here besides the most recent seasons of 2 iconic shows.

It is his argument dude. Take it for what it is. I also would strongly disagree that “Dead Hand” was superior in any way to “The Spoils of War,” but then again that is just my own opinion. Both were well-paced and well-acted episodes of television, I just found the GoT episode far more engaging in its narrative.

Game of Thrones is like the most boring thing ever. Seriously I fell asleep most of the time watching it. Especially last two seasons. Absolutely nothing happened there. As for the question in this thread. I prefer writers choices most of the time.

I understand when people criticize the writing, but to say that nothing happened is just…
