I’m thinking of starting to binge it. I’ve never seen any of it. I like 80s TV. I binged St. Elsewhere and thought it was terrific and I’m halfway through China Beach which is just brilliant at times.

Any fans (or detractors) of it?

Also interesting how the Emmys basically saved the show from cancellation. Do you think that could happen today? (it doesn’t seem like many shows on the edge of cancellation get nominated nowadays.)

I have been watching a few reruns on Saturday night and it does hold up. There are some issues that were raised on the show that apply to today.

China Beach I know is on DVD, but not on streaming. I’m sure it has to do with music rights. It took a long time for it to end up on DVD at all. Streaming I guess would be a different set of contracts for music. I did used to have the China Beach soundtrack CD. I loved that CD so dang much.

I think it’s the only show that filled all available spots in any Emmy acting category:

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series 1982:
Tauren Blacque as Det. Neal Washington
Michael Conrad as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus* (also won in 1981)
Charles Heid as Officer Andy Renko
Michael Warren as Officer Bobby Hill
Bruce Weitz as Det. Mick Belker

For that alone I think it’s worth checking out if you have an opportunity.

Roots did it first in the Lead Actor category actually.
