The hurdle was getting nominated, so in that respect, yes, Zendaya is very much in this race. However, I imagine that many Emmy voters who wouldn’t know Zendaya from a needle in a haystack will now catch up to “Euphoria” before voting starts and see what an awful mess that show is. To say she’s the best element of it is faint praise, so it’s a double-edged sword. Battling against the deficits of the series and doing stunning work in spite of that is clearly noteworthy. But will her age, the graphic nature of the series, and being a “teen” show be something that voters will want to rubberstamp? It’s not Drama Series, I know, but I think some voters still think this way. The reality is, the next generation of contenders are now emerging, and these dying awards shows need the next generations to keep this ship afloat. The Zendaya’s, the Shira Haas’s, the Jharrel Jerome’s, the Paul Mescal’s, the Asante Blackk’s, the Joey King’s, the Eliza Scalen’s, etc. It’s time. But just focusing on lead actress drama, I think there are other narratives going on in the race for the win, but Zendaya is a spoiler, at least.

Interesting to hear that you like Comer when you usually seem to prefer much more naturalistic performances

You’re not wrong! I just find Comer’s comedic timing to be kind of a blast, and she brings some much needed fun to a series that otherwise cannot seem to generate it. A great actress in that sense. The other nominees this year are anywhere from boring to bad for me.

Plus, if another teen drama like Stranger Things couldn’t win any of its acting nominations, then what makes people think Euphoria can?

Stranger Things and Euphoria are such different shows that I don’t know why anyone would think to compare them (ST isn’t really a “teen” show, either, it’s an action-adventure genre show that is watched by everybody from kids to adults).

Euphoria has way more prestige trappings compared to ST, at that, and Zendaya’s character has way more stereotypically award-bait material.

She can win, many voters have already watched and loved Euphoria, at least in the acting branch which is the only one that matters, and I am not basing this only on her nomination, many actors have spoken publicly about it in the last two days. I firmly believe that only she, Linney or Comer can win.

What about SAG winner Jennifer Aniston whose show received 5 acting nominations? Ok…

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

She’s on a teen drama that’s been criticized as being too sexualizing of its female characters and too graphic in its depiction of substance abuse, so no, she’s not winning. This is a three-way race between Olivia Colman, Laura Linney, and Jennifer Aniston.

This actually makes her nomination impressive since none of these things have hindered her. She is certainly a dark horse.

Also, he’s never watched the show. You probably shouldn’t dress a show down before you watch it.
