The Handmaid’s Tale is not that strong anymore to occupy two slots in a supporting category

According to what, though? Last time it was fully eligible it got 3 slots just in SActress it won the 2 guest categories last year with leftover episodes and still got SAG ensemble and Moss nom this year (which is not less than what it got at its peak). I’m too only predicting it to get 1 supporting actress in but there are no clear indications it can’t actually get 2.

The problem with both Dowd and Strahovski getting in is that The Handmaid’s Tale is not that strong anymore to occupy two slots in a supporting category. You could say the same for Dern and Streep but theirs is a different case, like Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda both getting in.

Thats why I’m only predicting Dowd. She won for season 1 and got nominated for season 2, not to mention season 3 was her best in terms of material and performance.

I also have the feeling we might be understimating Fiona. It’s true that KE season 3 wasn’t anything special, but her performance was phenomenal and everyone had her as their MVP. Not mention the show aired at the right time. She also managed to get in last year for a season were she had nothing to do and she was nominated over more deserving contenders, including Seehorn.

    FYC Emmys:
Jane Lapotaire, The Crown (Drama Guest Actress)
Helena Bonham Carter, The Crown (Drama Supporting Actress)
Josh O'Connor, The Crown (Drama Supporting Actor)
Fiona Shaw, Killing Eve (Drama Supporting Actress)
Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh, Killing Eve (Drama Actress)
Evgenia Dodina, Killing Eve (Drama Guest Actress)

When this happened it was coming off a series win. This year it has zero chance to win the series category. I have also said it elsewhere that guest acting categories have a different way of working which still puts it in a situation to receive multiple nominations.

For me, Strahovski had the bigger season, which is why I think she would get in over Dowd. Dowd had a spotlight episode (if I remember correctly… it was so long ago! …but she was barely featured in the season otherwise). Both could definitely get in with 8 slots, but personally I would mark off Yvonne for a nom if it came down to one or the other.

Generally speaking, I’m hoping for some deserving out-of-left-field nominations in Supporting Actress/Actor.

I respectfully disagree. Dowd had a much bigger presence this season than she had in the two previous ones. We also learned more about Aunt Lydia’s past and we saw more sides of her. And this Is coming from someone who didn’t care for her at all in season 1 and 2. Strahovski was great but tbh this was her weakest season imo. I was truly disappointed by her material. I think Dowd was better this time around.

I don’t know what to do with Supporting Actress. Helena, Julia, Janet, Meryl and Laura all seem like locks in a field of 8. Then there’s 3 spaces left. THT could take up two of them with Dowd and Strahovski. Previous winner Thandie Newton could return, despite her series having no buzz. I have a feeling Fiona Shaw will get in again, she got in last year with no material, she has stellar material this year so I don’t see why she would miss. Snook could get in if the acting branch come across Succession. I want to Mbatha Raw because I think TMS will do very well in the acting category. MBB had her best season yet and has never missed.

I still think The Handmaid’s Tale will be liked enough to get in both Dowd and Strahovski. I disagree that the latter had a weak season, as I found “Useful” and “Unknown Caller” to feature some of her best work on the show. Dowd is incredible when she’s onscreen, which isn’t very often. But she won when no one expected her too and might just be nominated the show until the very end. Also, this show features acting with a capital A, which the academy loves (which is also why Gugu Mbatha-Raw can definitely surprise).

I don’t see Fiona Shaw as a threat as all because I think KE will be a non-factor. She easily stole the season, but unless you’re Tatiana or Viola, you’re probably not going to get in without your show.

You can obviously disagree with this.

Emmys FYC - "Unbelievable" and "The Handmaid's Tale" in all categories; Viola Davis in Best Drama Actress for the final season of "HTGAWM;" "Ozark:" Drama Series, Laura Linney (Best Actress) and Julia Garner (Best Supporting Actress)

Maura Tierney got nominated for Season 2 of The Affair and her show was a non-factor at the Emmys. Fiona can definetly get in, even if KE completely underperforms.

    And Constance Zimmer for Unreal.

And the episode where he’s trying to connect with his infant son, damn it broke me.

Yeah I need that to be his tape.

Not everyone that wins a Golden Globe gets nominated at the Emmys. Just ask Ruth Wilson, Christian Slater, Chloe Sevigny, Lady Gaga, Gael Garcia Bernal and Emily Blunt.

    And Constance Zimmer for Unreal.

She was widely predicted that year, also in the top six of combined predictions.

I know. I was just reacting to the point you can’t be nominated if your show is weak. Killing Eve is arguably a more beloved show in the academy than The Affair or Unreal so Fiona Shaw could theoretically pull it off.
