Big Love, In Treatment, Tell Me You Love Me, The Wire

Thanks! Since the only one that they have nominated from those was Big Love the next year, I suppose that it was the only show close to the nomination in 2008.

For a long time I thought that there is no way for HBO to not have two dramas cause we all know that the Academy adores them and the Guilds even more. But since BLL 2 and Westworld are both big trash this year (in my opinion) and I cannot see The Outsider and Euphoria nominated, I decided to leave only Succession and I found something that backs up that is very possible.

Since Netflix entered the game this is how they have divided the slots:

    HBO
    2013 1 – GoT
    2014 2 – GoT and True Detective
    2015 1 – GoT
    2016 1 – GoT
    2017 1 – Westworld
    2018 2 – GoT and Westworld
    2019 2 – GoT and Succession

But this ignores the fact that they have had only one or two viable contenders in the drama race in those years and all of them have actually gotten nominated since 2014 probably. This year they have three/four. Personal opinions aside, Big Little Lies had a better reception than half of those predicted nominees based on any quantifiable metric and arguably a better guild performance as well. HBO just got 4/5 slots at PGA and 5/5 at DGA this year. I doubt they’ll go with things like Pose and This is Us over a much stronger HBO contender like Big Little Lies. Westworld and The Outsider are arguable so won’t comment on that.

After watching “Succession’s” “Hunting,” I have slotted in Snook and Macfadyen. Snook has had three stellar outings in a row, while Macfadyen is doing the best work on the show of all male actors (next to Cox). Speaking of Cox, this has to be his submission, right? After respecting but not loving S1, S2 is starting to grow on me a lot. That said, I am cautious because delivering a good performance doesn’t automatically mean you’re getting nominated.

Now you know why we had them in in the first place.

I would say Hunting is the episode Cox should submit but I worry that if both him and Strong are nominated that they both submit This is Not For Tears (which in that case would mean they’re both going to vote split.

IMO Succession’s submissions should be like this :

Series – Hunting, Safe Room, Tern Haven, Argestes, Dundee, This is Not For Tears
    Brian Cox – Hunting
    Jeremy Strong – Return
Sarah Snook – This is Not For Tears (or DC or pretty much anything because she was excellent in every episode this season)
Kieran Culkin – DC or Tern Haven
Matthew Macfadyen – Safe Room (not predicting Macfadyen at the moment but might slot him in over Culkin because I don’t see two Succession S. Actors getting nominated)
    Cherry Jones – Argestes

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

FYC Goldderby Awards : MAURA TIERNEY AND DOMINIC WEST FOR THE FINAL SEASON OF THE AFFAIR

Snook’s next 3 are actually even better. It’s a stellar performance.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

I have added her a few hours ago as soon as the interview dropped and I finished reading it. It’s a great read.

    In 6 days.

Can’t believe so many were doubting Thandie in the first place…

Because she got shut out of SAG despite having won the Emmy and gotten nominated there for season 1?

SAG has six slots – the Emmys have 14 slots for the same competition…

SAG to Emmy is also not a 1-1. People seem to be forgetting that.

SAG to Emmy is also not a 1-1. People seem to be forgetting that.

But you’re forgetting the fact that Newton got in at SAG in 2017 when she hadn’t won the Emmy in a field that included The Crown, Stranger Things, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, Homeland and House of Cards. With all of those shows being ineligible in 2019 Westworld should have easily gotten into ensemble and Actress considering it received five acting Emmy nominations and Newton won the Emmy but instead (in one of the weakest fields in SAG history) SAG-AFTRA decided to vote for Better Call Saul and The Americans in Ensemble and Robin Wright (whose show bombed with critics) and Julia Garner (who gave a supporting performance that hadn’t been nominated anywhere else before) over Newton. If that doesn’t show there is a drop off in support for Newton then I don’t know what will convince you.

I find it ironic that people (not this user specifically) yell at some of us for predicting Succession in acting because it missed at SAG in one of the most competitive years in the field but then predict multiple acting nominations for Westworld and Series when it missed out at PGA, DGA, WGA and SAG in the weakest fields at those awards ceremonies. I mean hypocrisy is too nice a word.

Nonetheless I am considering Newton a bit more due to the news today.

I agree with this to an extent. It’s why I am considering Succession and This is Us a bit more than others because they easily could have been next in line at SAG for ensemble but lost their slot due to Game of Thrones.

I would also apply this to Westworld as well but the show reminds me too much of True Blood as a HBO fantasy show that had a collapse of support from WGA, SAG and PGA in a weak year that eventually got shut out the following year at the Emmys in a competitive field.
