Having not watched Ozark, can someone answer me this:

In season 3, is either Garner or McTeer a significantly larger role than the other? Asking because it was easy to dismiss vote splitting last year with the Maisel ladies because Borstein is a much larger presence on the show comparatively to Hinkle. I get the sense that this past season McTeer and Garner were of equal importance but I don’t know.

Garner has a much bigger role than McTeer. McTeer’s role was expanded this season, but Garner is a borderline lead, where McTeer is definitely supporting.

McTeer will probably be nominated, but I think Garner could still overcome votesplitting for a win because A) her character is the fan favorite, B) her performance is pretty widely regarded as better, and C) she has the more important and bigger role.

I mean Garner has the bigger role but they’re both beyond supporting and I’d even say McTeer had a way more interesting arc this season.

I really love Garner but she isn’t as memorable as McTeer this season even if she does have the bigger part she got her best material in season 2.

I’d prefer McTeer this year, but I do believe that Garner will be ahead of her. Someone compared her to Aaron Paul earlier, which is funny because Garner vs McTeer reminds of Paul vs Giancarlo Esposito, in that I believe the show’s fan favorite sidekick (Paul/Garner) will be ahead of the more villainous character (Esposito/McTeer) even though the latter may have more hype and a stronger narrative.

However, unlike that particular race, I think they’ll split and Bonham Carter will take it (or Snook, so long as she overcomes the nomination hurdle).

    Is it?

    I agree with both arguments:

    1. That Garner is regarded as a co-lead more so than McTeer, and

    2. That McTeer had more meaty things to do this season.

Garner mentioned in one of the cast interviews that she had some reservations about the romance between Ruth and Ben. But honestly, had that not been a side story angle, she would have had nothing to do. (Plus it serves as a perfect launch point for season four.)

While McTeer has an acting legacy on her side, Garner has that “ingenue” element that has endeared her to so many. I don’t see voters choosing McTeer over Garner unless they want to give her her one and only shot at an Emmy for the show. And even that would be a stretch.

After reading through the last 5 pages of the last drama thread, I realized that The Crown and Succession fans get very nervous whenever someone brings up the possibility of Ozark overperforming and winning a boatload of Emmys.

Julia Garner can win. I am not predicting it, but she definitely can. That character has reached immense popularity. McTeer will certainly siphon votes from her, but what if they’re like Comer and Oh and they get the majority of the votes? It’s not impossible.

I don’t blame people for being skeptical about the hopeful hypotheses of Ozark fans. While I do think that Ozark is going to overperform, I would be surprised if they snagged more than two actor wins. And that’s only because of the odds, not because I don’t think they deserve praise.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they got Best Drama and two actor wins either. The show is strangely both ridiculously popular and a little secret that audiences keep discovering every day.

And the biggest, most popular compliment you’ll see is for the actors. It’s those main five actors — which actually sounds small when comparing it to the other casts — that keep people watching even when the writing isn’t perfect.

I think it’s that cast (not ignoring the improved writing and solid, stylized direction) that will push people into picking Ozark for Best Drama Series.

I think a winners lineup of Succession (Series), Cox, Linney, Carter, Pelphrey, Bledel, Scott, Succession (writing) and The Crown (directing) – as suggested earlier – is far too obvious to actually happen. We know how these things go; there will be at least 1-2 upsets.

I still think Julia Garner could repeat in Supporting Actress. It’ll be interesting with 8 nominees… voters could go in any which way, but for me (without knowing who the nominees will be), I would say the race for the win is down to Julia Garner vs Helena BC vs Laura Dern vs Sarah Snook.

McTeer is fighting for a nom at this point. She can’t win against the 4 ladies mentioned above. Her role isn’t big enough. I agree with @thatnerdgreg in his comparison of Julia Garner to Aaron Paul and Janet McTeer to Giancarlo Esposito from Breaking Bad in terms of the difference between the actresses and their “supporting” status on their show.

    From mafro987:

Sorry but you didn’t ‘prove’ anything definitively. IMDb stats and twitter mentions do not align with the TV Academy. Janet McTeer is a more respected and established thespian with two Oscar nominations, and some members of the voting body will be drawn to that. Her character is not a ‘fan favourite’ and therefore doesn’t incite as much online discussion, but the performance itself (what the Emmys are meant to judge) is brilliant. While Gold Derby polls certainly aren’t representative of the TV Academy either, McTeer received more votes than Garner on this forum. I’ve also seen a lot of people saying Garner’s material this season wasn’t as strong as her material in season 2.

While no one is saying McTeer will actually get more votes than Garner, it’s plausible that she’d take a percentage that would otherwise to go Garner. The question is whether the other contenders amass enough support to benefit.

Yeah, I am also sorry, but you told me the same thing last year when I told you that Comer was going to beat Oh… and I was right. Also, I used Facebook, not Twitter, since the latter is full with false bubbles just like this forum. It is extremely naive to think that voters are so much different than the fandom of the show. And NO ONE cares that McTeer is a veteran and has two Oscar noms, absolutely NO ONE. This is beyond irrelevant. Garner has the performance, the passion and the buzz. McTeer has nothing on her.

    From FYC : J. Smith-Cameron:

Yeah but a majority of people thought Comer outsold Oh in season 2 of Killing Eve. That’s not the case with season 3 of Ozark where fans seem to be more split.

They are not split AT ALL. It does not matter that many people in this forum do not want to see it. Garner would win over Linney between the fandom, yet, some of you are arguing that she can lose versus McTeer LOL.

    ReginaIsKing:

If McTeer had the same material last year that she had this season, she would’ve no doubt been nominated and kept Garner from winning, and she’d do it with no problem this year too as Garner had her weakest season.

    The Crown:

Nah, Pelphrey and Linney outsold. McTeer was great which should easily earn her a nomination and Garner didn’t disappoint either, I guess she was just there. I don’t think she’s winning though this has nothing to go with her costar being nominated alongside her.

Those are the two most absurd and delusional opinions I have ever seen in this forum, they are just false. I do not know if you have not seen season 3 or you just want to troll, but those claims are simply not true. Garner had her best season by a mile, it is the first season in which she was lead and her material was as great as those of Linney and Pelphry. She is moving the story forward constantly, saying that she is “just there” is absurd….

Garner role is 10 times bigger. It is like Borstein and Hinkle. Even Lisa Emery is more talked about between the fandom than McTeer and she had much more to do in the finale. The great moment of McTeer in the finale that many people bring up here is not related to her acting at all, the opposite, it makes Bateman and Linney’s acting shine more, not hers.
