It sounds insane that I have Bob Odenkirk snubbed because he has always been nominated and he had a good season, but a strong season is sometimes not enough to reverse course. It is like how most of us have Viola Davis snubbed. The penultimate season of Homeland was a resurgent one (and I would even argue its second best) and Claire Danes had only been snubbed once, but she did not come back. Jim Carter’s best season on Downton Abbey was the final one, but they dropped him after four nominations. It was my favourite season for Michelle Dockey too, but they did not bring her back, despite only dropping her the year before. Michael C. Hall had been nominated for every season of Dexter since the first, but was dropped for the seventh season and like Homeland, I would say that that was its second best. Then you have people like Don Cheadle, Matt LeBlanc and Hugh Laurie where the final season was not necessarily their best, but Cheadle and LeBlanc had been nominated for all four prior seasons and Laurie was coming off of six nominations, the last five consecutive. How could they not hold on one last time for their final seasons? This actually applies right now for Silicon Valley. Christine Baranski! Sandra Oh had been nominated for all five prior seasons and Chandra Wilson was coming off of four consecutive nominations, yet they were both dropped for the sixth season, which ended with the hospital shooter double-episode that would have been Wilson’s tape.

I would argue this explanation can also be applied to Mandy Patinkin this year. Particularly the Baranski point because one of (if not the) best tapes Baranski would have ever had was the finale of The Good Wife yet she was dropped whilst the show returned in Writing. I think parallels can be seen with Homeland this year, which I think is going to get dropped in Supporting Actor and return in Writing and Directing.

In before never- missed- at – SAG  Sterling K. Brown (multiple Emmy worthy tapes in season 4) snatches another (completely unexpected but deserved) win.

Bateman is a very limited actor. I’ll never understand the acclaim. This is the first year he’s nomination worthy. But a win isn’t impossible whatsoever. He’s clearly beloved. However, I don’t see Ozark winning more than 2 acting Emmys, unless Pelphrey fails to win.

I wish I could be certain that Linney is taking it home, but I just don’t know. Colman and Aniston are tough competition.

They’re all great on Ozark. I love the show, obviously, and enjoy everyone in it. But honestly, with Pelphrey’s steep competition and McTeer/Garner likely vote splitting… It could totally be a situation where the lead of the buzziest drama is the only one who gets it.

It would be one thing if Jason Bateman knocked it completely out the park during the episodes where he was kidnapped where that would have been his showcase, but his scenes came up a little short to me.

I personally thought Bateman did knock that episode out the park. I thought he was fantastic the entire season actually. It’s not easy to stand out amongst these very flashy characters and performers, when you’re playing this repressed and painfully tightly-wound guy, and yet I thought he held his own against his co-stars. I don’t think he’s going to win and honestly probably shouldn’t (not when Cox and Strong are in contention as well), but I would not be mad, at all, if he did.

    FYC [D]: Ozark | Linney/Aniston | Cox | Garner/HBC | Pelphrey
    FYC [C]: Schitt's Creek | O'Hara | Danson | Gilpin/Murphy | D. Levy

...also here to defend Steve Carell in The Morning Show.

When the anti Succession movement hates the show so much they don’t understand a joke.

    Holly Hunter is missing.

Succession is my favorite drama on television right now and even I don’t see a world in which all of them get in. Succession hasn’t been embraced by the actors at all in the past for me to suspend my rationale and predict all of them to get nominated. I still see it winning series and writing without any acting nominations. All that being said, I would love for all the Succession actors to get nominated, they deserve it.

And when I was talking about the anti Succession movement I was joking.

I’m wondering if we’re underestimating Jason Watkins for The Crown. He is being pushed by Netflix and if voters are watching this season and check off Bonham Carter, Colman, Dance, Menzies, O’Connor and Lapotaire, I can’t imagine them leaving him off.

I think it’s unlikely, considering supporting actor is a stacked category and so many shows have multiple contenders in it, and he wasn’t talked about as much (which is a shame, as I thought he was better than O’Connor.) I think The Crown will probably get one actor in each category, although I’m still not sure if O’Connor gets nominated.

FYC EMMY DRAMA CATEGORIES: Succession; Series, Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox, Matthew MacFayden, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Cherry Jones, “This Is Not For Tears writing and directing
Better Call Saul: Series, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Tony Dalton, Rhea Seehorn, “Bagman” in directing, “Bad Choice Road” writing.
The Crown: Series, Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Watkins, Jane Lapotaire, “Aberfan” directing, “Moondust” Writing. Star Trek Picard: Patrick Stewart

How is everyone feeling regarding Josh O’Connor? About a month ago I felt like he was pretty safe, but I’m starting to wonder whether he really is. Of course the SAG win is going to help everyone from the cast a bit, but is that really enough? This category is becoming more crowded by the day, especially with the Westworld men now contending as well.

Emmys FYC - "Unbelievable" and "The Handmaid's Tale" in all categories; Viola Davis in Best Drama Actress for the final season of "HTGAWM;" "Ozark:" Drama Series, Laura Linney (Best Actress) and Julia Garner (Best Supporting Actress)
