Stranger Things has FANTASTIC editing. There are so many separate plotlines going on in season three but it moves between them without ever feeling clunky.

I also think the editing in GLOW is really great. All the scenes in the ring could be awkward and hard to follow with the wrong editor, but combined with the choreography and stunts, the editing makes them so strong.

The editors are kind of the laziest when it comes to marking their ballots. Vote-splitting is not really a thing with them during the nominations phase. It is hard to get triple-nominated in writing and directing, but not at all in editing, even though they have fewer slots. Even with its seven wins from nineteen nominations, The Assassination of Gianni Versace could not manage a second nomination in either writing or directing, but it got three nominations in editing. So you just figure out what is going to max out and go from there.

In limited, that will be Watchmen. It got an ACE nomination and the editors have been kind to genre shows, like how Lost won twice out of seven nominations. They have three editors, so that is three slots. I am rounding out the category with I Know This Much is True and Mrs. America. This branch seems to be dominated by the steak-eaters and so HBO does very well here, so I expect them to respond to I Know This Much is True, especially since there is the inherent challenge of editing the Mark Ruffalos and also this feels like the kind of project that just has one guy editing the entire miniseries. Mrs. America is not quite up the alley of the branch that has given so many nominations to Better Call Saul and Fargo, but those kinds of shows all ended up getting pushed out by the coronavirus and Mrs. America is positioned well overall, which always helps. FX also has a better track record than Netflix.

Ozark will probably only submit two episodes, so they should get both. Killing Eve might be able to hold on, as the editors sometimes hold on an extra year beyond the writers and directors, like with Dexter and Heroes. Those are dated examples, but Killing Eve does have solid footing, coming off of consecutive ACE wins. I have The Outsider‘s pilot because an acclaimed pilot comes along every so often that can stand above its series, like The Killing and The Last Man on Earth. And if Leo Trombetta can get nominated for True Detective season 3 over When They See Us and something out of left field like Narcos, he should be able to get in for this. Succession feels like it is in that Atlanta and Silicon Valley position of going from zero to two nominations for its second season, but I am concerned about vote-splitting just because they submitted four last time and they could do that again.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel can easily retain its two slots and they could even submit a third and be fine. Four might be too many. Schitt’s Creek did not bother to submit last year and in categories that they did, they went conservative with a single submission, so they should be good for a single slot especially after their ACE nomination. Curb Your Enthusiasm always did well here until it was pushed out by heavy competition last time, although it still won ACE. Competition should shallow enough this time, but it might be as much of a non-factor as former favourite Silicon Valley and could be pushed out by a growing Dead to Me. Run is coming out too late for this branch, like the first seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale and Silicon Valley, which both went from snubs to wins.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want killing eve to be nominated this season? Season 3 had editing mistakes and disjointed editing that made the pacing of the story felt off. I know big little lies had editing issues because Andrea Arnold wasn’t allowed to have the final cut but at least it didn’t had many mistakes as killing eve did

Interesting that you have Succession twice over previous winner The Handmaid’s Tale. Is this because of the tend of this branch to vote for the Drama Series frontrunners?

I agree that The Crown is getting in though this year and that Ozark is winning this category.

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

FYC Goldderby Awards : MAURA TIERNEY AND DOMINIC WEST FOR THE FINAL SEASON OF THE AFFAIR

Not only that, but this branch finds so many shows in their second seasons (OzarkKilling EveThe Handmaid’s TaleAtlantaMaster of None, Silicon ValleyMad Men, 30 Rock, The Office).  This is often the fault of poor submissions for the first season.  Like neither The Handmaid’s Tale nor Silicon Valley submitted their pilots or first season finales and had multiple episodes on the ballot.  But when they were more established in their second seasons, they were able to go straight to wins and we often see shows go straight to double nominations too.  This is why I have Dave missing, even though I am bullish on it in writing and directing.  Four episodes is too many and are voters going to gravitate toward the finale or the pilot because it has a name behind it?

Mrs. America is probably the worst submitter of the year.  Their three submissions are equally likely, but there is no way that they get all of them in because Watchmen is already guaranteed three of the five slots, so Mrs. America is in danger of missing entirely.  We know that the editing branch is not always the most on the ball about new contenders (see previous paragraph), so that gives the pilot an edge.  But then the other two submissions are their main writing and directing pushes in the most acclaimed episode and the finale respectively.  I am ranking “Houston” third, but it is the most deserving and its editor was nominated by ACE just a few months ago.  What a mess!  Poor submissions and a late release cost When They See Us last year, so I probably should just drop Mrs. America, but I am not confident about what is next in line.  It is also not helped by how this is a steak-eater branch.  Their favourite shows are Better Call Saul and FargoBad Education would make the most sense if it had not been forever since they nominated a proper movie.

I’m curious: why are you predicting Euphoria and The Crown? I’m just asking because the first two seasons of The Crown missed here and I want to understand why do you think it would finally make the cut. And the only series that was nominated in the past decade and surprised (almost) everyone was Narcos, which was totally different from Euphoria.

Ugh, Riley, your tepid predictions of Better Things pulling a mild explosion in nominations is producing something close to hope in me.
