THREE times when voting for the Emmys, I am reminded that I MUST have viewed at least one sample episode per nominee. I really like how insistent the ballot is about this:

    emmy voting 3

Then, when you cast your vote, THIS screen pops up next:

    voting-89

    Then there’s ANOTHER box!

    voting - proof

Glad to see they’re really pushing it and hope it changes things but doubt it. At most, I think it’ll help frontrunners like Lithgow, who would easily win under a tape system, secure their lead.

Wow, that’s really interesting. Maybe the episodes might play a bigger factor than I thought. I guess we’ll see on Emmy night. A good test will be if Judith LIght wins.

I like that but unfortunately I don’t think a few extra clicks is going to make a major difference. I personally think that the Emmys need to upload the episodes to the voting website and require that every one of the episodes is watched before they can vote in that said category. Technology is capable of that nowadays and people are only becoming more tech savy. People might complain that it is to much work to have to rewatch episodes in all categories but being an Emmy voter is an honor. If you don’t want to put in the effort then you shouldn’t be able to vote. I would like this system because it would combine the best parts of the popular and tape systems. It would also get rid of Emmy voters that don’t actually watch the tapes and could lead to more inspired wins as the people voting would actually care.

Seeing Stranger Things on the photo got me worried.

If you don’t mind me asking, what shows besides South Park and Stranger Things did you vote for?

You’re so lucky to be able to vote for the Emmys and SAG Awards Tom! You definitely have the iconic career as an awards expert and predictor that demonstrates the kind of people that ought to be voting on these prestigious awards. Especially the Emmys, the actual freaking Emmys. WOW. 🙂

For your Goldderby Film Awards consideration: Isle of Dogs for every category, especially Music Score for Alexandre Desplat!

Trying not to sound like a stalker, going off of what he says in slugfest, I’m guessing he’ll vote for FEUD and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I’m not sure about the others. Maybe Samantha Bee and Wizard of Lies,

I think Kate McKinnon had a better episode than Judith Light. With Judith you need some context from the season overall, whereas Kate’s perfectly stands on its own. She was heartbreakingly perfect playing piano in that opening scene.

All 3 SNL women have a unique advantage due their show being a sketch series without any actual storyline from episode to episode.

A real test of episode submissions will be if Uzo Aduba wins for Orange Is The New Black or if even Thandie wins that same category. MBB I think will win, even though she had better tapes she could have submitted. Both Uzo and Thandie have the best tapes in Drama Supporting Actress, as does Tituss Burgess in Comedy Supporting Actor.

Under the tape system I would actually predict Jeffrey Wright. However, I can’t help but think that John Lithgow’s role is just too damn baity for Emmy voters to resist. I am predicting several upsets, but I still don’t have the confidence to try and call a Lithgow loss. I just don’t see it realistically happening.

If tapes really mattered I agree Jeffrey Wright would be a close second – but they also love Lithgow in general.

I think a lot of the Comedy categories could become more interesting if tapes matter. If any of Light, Burgess or Galifianakis can win then that will indicate something. Same if someone can upset Hugh Laurie.

In Drama this could make a difference in a wide open Actor race.

But yeah, right now I’m cautiously optimistic that this will do something, even if the effect isn’t huge. It’s not a guarantee even though I do like this change

Well, even if you liked McKinnon better, the only way Light is going to surpass a huge front runner like McKinnon, is by her tape. I wouldn’t see it for any other reason, like love for her show or hype for her performance. Also, I didn’t watch this season, or last, and still totally LOVED her performance so I don’t think it needed any context. Fabulous submission!

Yeah, I mainly agree for Titus. I thought Titus easily had the outstanding tape and Alec Baldwin is a major frontrunner, that is going to be really hard to overtake. The only thing is, you could still, sorta, make an argument that he is overdue.

Wright would be a good example because he had a strong tape and I don’t see any other reason he could take down Lithgow (he’s already won, their shows have equal love) But, if they do watch the tapes, I completely disagree with you and feel it would be hard for anyone not to vote for Lithgow. That is a crazy good submission. One of the best I’ve ever seen.

I could make an argument for Zach Galifianakis too, because there is huge hype for Glover while Tambor could easily ride to another win. Galifianakis has a pretty good tape (not great, but my favorite of the group) and I don’t see any other reason for his win.

He would be a lock under the old system with almost any episode. He’s not overdue or anything but is definitely the funniest in the category. As much as Glover has done very well in precursors his acting is subtle, which his submission didn’t help. The only reason he’s so far ahead on odds is because people see Atlanta as a potential spoiler in Series and Writing. Tambor would be a lazy pick, but I wouldn’t have an issue with him repeating because of how good he is in the show (particularly the episode)

Yeah, I think Lithgow is about the closest thing to a lock that we have in the acting races this year, no matter which system they use.

The only other point I can think of against Baldwin is that, if they are bothering to watch now, as people have said before, his submission wasn’t great. I doubt it’ll matter though

I have to take online classes for my job. I cannot skip ahead and take the quiz until I watch ALL of the modules.

So color me unimpressed by pop up reminders. The website could have been designed to force the voters to watch the tapes in order and vote at the end.

Tom, when I first entered the voting site to cast my ballot, the new warning system made me stop to double check whether I had seen episodes in categories in which I was voting.  After watching as many as the nominees as I could, I went into the comedy arena expecting to vote a straight “Veep” ticket, but I wound up being most impressed with “Master of None.”  I like these warnings.
