Do those even matter? Serious question lol.
Unfortunately, yeah, but mostly just for less popular shows. If voters haven’t already watched the full season by voting time, they probably won’t at all; they’ll just watch the submitted episode. The episodes have to be chosen really carefully to make sure they’re the best showcase for the actor’s work. And yeah, a lot of the time, voters won’t even watch any of the submitted episodes and vote for who they were planning to vote for anyway, but they can often be the deciding factor.July 17, 2019 at 10:21 am #1202981421
They mattered through 2014, which was the last year that each category had a separate panel of volunteer voters that received the tapes on DVD. Voting in every acting category opened up in 2015 to the entire acting branch. Examples like Margo Martindale and Ben Mendelsohn aside, the idea that any voter—and nobody gets paid to be a voter—would watch all of the submissions on the academy website is absurd when there are over a hundred acting nominees each year, not to mention all of the program categories that actors also vote on and which have their own submissions and which also used to have dedicated panels.
EDITED TO ADD: The post above mine is even absurd. Maybe a voter will watch maybe even a handful of submissions on the website, but again, there are over a hundred submissions just in acting and the system only works if you consider everything. Tapes do not matter, but they can be illustrative. Say that you think that Gwendoline Christie was really good in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and she submits that. That she submitted this episode over a different one has no bearing on her chances, but that she has an episode of that caliber to submit played a part in getting her the nomination and could play a part in getting her the win because people have seen her work in that episode.July 17, 2019 at 10:26 am #1202981438
I am going to try a different approach this year: Go with my gut and not alter after I make initial predictions. Saying that, Masie should submit the Long NightJuly 17, 2019 at 10:35 am #1202981472
This Is Us should submit the coming out episode, Six Thanksgivings. Which episodes should Ozark choose for the series category? I’m currently watching the show (and liking it), I think the return episode ‘Reparations’ was pretty good and it was nominated for directing, so it’s one possibility.July 17, 2019 at 10:41 am #1202981503
I long for the year when we don’t have to have the same discussion over and over on whether these submissions matter. They don’t. Yes it’s fun to still speculate over what people should submit but no one should be fooling themselves that these choices are going to change the race in any way.July 17, 2019 at 4:22 pm #1202982002
Stephen Root could literally submit any episode of Barry tbh. Every scene he was in during this last season was pure gold. But he’ll probably go with Ronny/Lily. Sarah Goldberg will most likely go with “The Audition” or “berkman > block”.July 17, 2019 at 5:12 pm #1202982054
Sandra Oh should submit ‘You’re Mine’ and Jodie Comer has that scene were she switches 4 accents on ‘I Hope You Like Missionary’, and not just that, the episode is good and she is on the center.July 17, 2019 at 5:48 pm #1202982083
Catherine O’Hara – “The Crowening”
Eugene Levy – “The Roast” or “A Whisper of Desire”
Billy Porter – “Love Is the Message”
Tony Hale – “Veep” or “South Carolina”
JLD – “Veep” or “Oslo”
Anna Chlumsky – “Pledge”
Sarah Goldberg – “The Audition”
Anthony Carrigan – “The Show Must Go On, Probably?”
Stephen Root – “ronny/lily” or “berkman > block”
Henry Winkler – “What?!”
Bill Hader – “Past = Present x Future Over Yesterday”July 17, 2019 at 5:53 pm #1202982087

The coming out stuff was better in The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning and that was an overall better episode than Six Thanksgivings even though they’re both great.July 17, 2019 at 8:15 pm #1202982202
For When They See Us:
Marsha Stephanie Blake: Part One? She’s great, but I’m can’t remember her best episode
Vera Farmiga: Part Two
Michael Kenneth Williams: Part Three
John Leguizamo: Part Three
Asante Blackk: Part OneJuly 17, 2019 at 9:31 pm #1202982238

Jodie can also submit ‘desperate times’ she has a really good crying scene at the end. Likewise Sandra can also submit ‘do you know how to dispose of a body’, her guilt of stabbing Villanelle was amazingJuly 18, 2019 at 5:39 am #1202982582
True. Now I think ‘Do You Know How To Dispose Of A Body and ‘You’re Mine’ could be great submissions, for me they are 50/50, but I need to rewatch to talk with more conscience. I agree with Jodie, but I still think that should and will send ‘I Hope You Like Missionary’. And Fiona Shaw? I just can’t remember clearly which episode would be good for her.July 18, 2019 at 6:04 am #1202982606
Personally, I think Jodie should submit the second episode, where she’s in that weirdo guy’s house. My god, she was hilarious and dramatic at the same time in that one. Oh should submit the finale; she was great in that episode. Lol, Shaw probably should go with epsiode 3, but she really doesn’t have a good tape in this season.
Oscar FYC - Lupita Nyong'o & Elisabeth Moss ("Us") - Best Actress & Supporting Actress. It must happen; otherwise the Tethered are coming.
