I think if any of Netflix’s internationally produced series surprise as a contender it will be The Serpent.

Finished it and enjoyed it overall. There are several weaknesses, but The Queen’s Gambit has plenty of weaknesses and that’s on course to sweep the season. The production design and costumes are amazing. Jenna Coleman is captivating and probably makes my personal Emmy supporting actress category. The other acting standout is Billy Howle. Rahim is good, but could’ve been more charismatic in the role. I think it can be a hit, but needs the right luck/promotion.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

Another festival? If this is a even a slight commercial hit for them, then HBO looks like their #1 (and at worst, a writing win for RTD?)

I don’t know whether RTD will win so easily when Coel and Frank are right there but I do think he could very well end up being top 3 (I assume he was second or third for A Very English Scandal anyway). It’s possible though.

I honestly think the potential is there for this show to go all the way to a Series win if it ends up being a hit for HBO Max. It has audience (9.1 on IMDB) and critics (100% on RT) passion over here in the UK. HBO Max are pushing it hard as evidenced by their use of a different trailer for the show (they basically copied and pasted the UK trailers for all their other imports) and the amount of panels and festivals they are pushing the show for. It has a timely and poignant factor that other winners have had, baity ensemble cast but also in spite of its dark subject matter it isn’t a depressing show. It’s a show that combines comedic and dramatic beats to create a very human story. The story is built more around the characters. It’s also a visually escapist show.

There is a lot of potential for it but it just needs to be an audience hit (and not flop with American critics). I find it quite fascinating how the HBO Max trailer currently has 2.3 million views on YouTube. You could argue that’s because of NPH’s face being in the thumbnail but The Little Things has Denzel Washington’s face in the thumbnail and that has 43k views for its trailer. It’s quite clear HBO are willing to push this show hard. I can see it being win competitive in Series, Actor (Olly Alexander), S. Actress (Keeley Hawes) and Writing. Nominations wise it has potential but I don’t see a path for it to a win in either Supporting Actor or Actress.

Yeah I saw the first episode and I quite enjoyed Rahim and Coleman’s performances (especially the latter because she had a strong screen presence in spite of limited screen time!)

It could either end up being this year’s Unorthodox or this year’s Giri/Haji. It all depends on how much its escapist aesthetic appeals to audiences and if Tahar Rahim scores a Globe nomination for The Mauritanian because that could incentivise Netflix to campaign it.

Considering we don’t have a predictions centre yet I have listed a bunch of contenders/probable submissions in case people want to make predictions and don’t know what’s eligible.

Putting border line contenders like Lydia West and Jenna Coleman in both supporting and lead categories. Also putting all three of John Boyega, Shaun Parkes and Letitia Wright in lead and supporting as there is confusion over their category placements (even though Boyega and Parkes should be in lead and Wright should be in supporting).

Justice League is no longer a miniseries, Snyder is making a full on four hour film (cause he’s an idiot). So it can’t compete at the Emmys. The Razzies on the other hand…

Justice League is no longer a miniseries, Snyder is making a full on four hour film (cause he’s an idiot).

A four hour film, a full hour longer than Endgame and all of LOTRs? For a panned film that’s already been seen and disliked by everybody outside of small very vocal minority.

Guess this is what happens when your surrounded by yes men.

Why is this project even happening? It was already a money loser and the DC films have essentially abandoned all continuity to the Synder-films.

The stuff that about JL that the GP actually liked (Wonder Woman & Aquaman) are completely free of the Synder trappings. Affleck’s quit, Fisher to currently suing WB, Miller has his own problematic stuff going on. Even the upcoming Suicide Squad is a complete “let’s start over” move. Not to mention Joker was all the incentive they needed for more stand alone material.

JSo it can’t compete at the Emmys. The Razzies on the other hand

    As it should.

I’m doing this on the Super Early 2022 Oscars thread weekly so I thought I’d do it on the Emmys thread too. Here’s who I see as win competitive in the Limited/Movie Supporting Actress race at the time of writing:

Anna Chlumsky, Inventing Anna – She’s overdue and whilst this may not be her first role in a prestige drama it is her first high profile one. I’d argue that she’d be the frontrunner if Inventing Anna gets rave reviews or decent reviews and a strong audience response.

Keeley Hawes, It’s a Sin – This one solely depends on how well the show does in the US and if voters watch the whole show (which I would think they would considering how short it is). It’s a performance that stays with the viewer and there is an episode in which Hawes has the showiest material of any performer on the show. Some are predicting It’s a Sin‘s second acting nomination to be Neil Patrick Harris but I think it’s more likely to be her. Her show needs to have more acting nominations (I’d say two) and a Series nod for her to win though. Also helps she is a more recognisable face than she was two years. ago. because of Bodyguard.

Marielle Heller, The Queen’s Gambit – I saw someone call her this year’s Toni Colette but I actually think she’s this year’s Stellan Skarsgard. Showy performance in a pop cultural phenomenon and top series player from someone who Hollywood seems eager to award in one form or another. I am predicting her to win the Globe + CC just like Skarsgard and I think she will be the early frontrunner in the odds when the predictions centre opens (when will that be?) The Queen’s Gambit needs to be a big player and not fade out for this to happen though.

Jean Smart, Mare of Easttown – As always Smart cannot be counted out. Although there are rumours that Nicholson has the showier role. I think Smart will make it in but something (and this is completely baseless) is telling me that this won’t be that big a player in Series.

Am I the only person excited for these categories more than any of the others?Sure the drama and comedy fields are barren but this one is competitive af and for once there seems to be a lot of meaningful and well written original stories from unique voices. Something there hasn’t really been outside of maybe When They See Us and to an extent Watchmen here. Sure there are a lot of mainstream big budget shows this year like The Queen’s GambitHalston and The Undoing but it’s interesting seeing I May Destroy YouSmall Axe and The Good Lord Bird attract attention and it will be exciting if It’s a Sin and The Underground Railroad attract attention too.

Imagine if It’s a Sin is a hit in the US it’ll be IMDY vs IaS in writing, Small Axe vs IMDY vs QG in directing, Olly Alexander vs Hugh Grant vs Ethan Hawke, Michaela Coel vs Anya Taylor-Joy, John Boyega, Letitia Wright vs Marielle Heller vs Keeley Hawes.

    British Invasion part 2 pls

Edit: HOW did I forget Hawes???

I’m also more excited for limited categories since it surpassed both drama and comedy in terms of quality and number of contenders. It’s the new trend in industry.
