So here are each of the shows that have been released by IMDB votes. Their US tally (which isn’t very proportionate because some users can block their location from being shown on IMDB but is still a sample) is in brackets.

Those in bold are still airing or have only been out for 2 weeks.

1. The Queen’s Gambit – 262k votes (23k US votes)
2. The Haunting of Bly Manor – 70k votes (8k US votes)
3. Wandavision – 58k votes (6k US votes)
4. The Undoing – 57k votes (6k US votes)
5. Your Honour – 18k votes (2k US votes)

6. Small Axe (TOTAL OF ALL INDIVIDUAL FILMS) – 12k votes (2k US votes)
7. It’s a Sin – 12k votes (525 US votes)
8. I May Destroy You – 11k votes (1k US votes)
9. A Teacher – 8k votes (1k US votes)
10. The Third Day – 7k votes (855 US votes)

11. The Comey Rule – 6k votes (1k US votes)
12. Stateless – 6k votes (565 US votes)
13. We Are Who We Are – 5k votes (618 US votes)
14. The Good Lord Bird – 4k votes (908 US votes)
15. Small Axe (SERIES) – 2k votes (320 US votes)

What is interesting is how popular I May Destroy You and Small Axe are with the industry (especially the former) in spite of not being very popular shows with the mainstream. It’s interesting for the latter because it has had a similar audience response vs industry response in the UK as it has had in the US.

It will be interesting to see if Wandavision will end up being another The Queen’s Gambit or another Bly Manor or if It’s a Sin will end up being another I May Destroy You/Small Axe or another A Teacher.

IMDB rating:

1. It’s a Sin – 8.9
2. The Queen’s Gambit – 8.6
3. WandaVision – 8.2
4. I May Destroy You – 8.1
5. Small Axe – 7.9
5. Your Honor – 7.9

7. The Good Lord Bird – 7.6
8. Stateless – 7.5
9. The Comey Rule – 7.4
9. The Haunting of Bly Manor – 7.4
9. The Undoing – 7.4

12. We Are Who We Are – 7.1
13. A Teacher – 6.9
14. The Third Day – 6.4

What is perhaps of note is that since 2016 no limited series has been nominated with a score lower than 7.7. Of course that doesn’t mean a show with a score lower than 7.7 can’t be nominated but it is an interesting stat nonetheless and probably highlights how competitive the series category has become in the era of peak TV.

By the way, is Inventing Anna confirmed to be for this year’s Emmys ?

At the moment we’re assuming it (and Halston) are because they have long finished shooting and went into post production ages ago and Netflix usually have three big limited series in the Spring. One of them this year seems to be The Serpent and considering how Anatomy of a Scandal is their only other big one and it’s still shooting I think we’re assuming Inventing Anna and Halston will be the other two big shows.

Even though it was in the HBO teaser, I’m suspect about Scenes from a Marriage coming out in time – as well as a lot of the other limited series. I guess we won’t see until official release dates are confirmed.

I do think May will be a bloodbath for releases. I anticipate Halston will get the Hollywood slot and Inventing Anna will get the When They See Us slot at Netflix. I assume The Underground Railroad will go to May too.

It’s partly why I’m bullish about WandavisionIt’s a Sin and to an extent Genius because they’ve got the whole of March to grow in buzz as the only big releases. If they fail in growing in buzz in March it might be a sign that they’ve peaked but I’m not anticipating that.

Anna Delvey is being released from prison in October so I wonder if Netflix will choose to release the show in the second half of 2021 in light of this. If they do then one of Kidman, Olsen or Winslet will definitely be getting in.

She has already been released. She has a pretty active twitter account.

I really hope this is Anna Chlumsky’s Emmy vehicle. She should have won multiple of them for Veep.

I will say regardless I am really excited for Scenes From a Marriage. Hopefully this is the perfect vehicle for Chastain and Isaac.

Don’t forget that it’s written-directed by Hagai Levi, who’s overdue of every recognition he deserves, and the cinematography is done by the one who contributes to Succession directing upset (Boar on the floor!).

"The Lost Daughter" in every eligible category - Film
"Succession" Season 3 in every eligible category - TV
"Heaux Tales" by Jasmine Sullivan in every eligible category - Music

Not like it matters so much but Michaela Coel appearing on the cover of Vanity Fair with Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael B Jordan, LaKeith Stanfield, Spike Lee, Awkwafina, Maya Rudolph and Dan Levy shows how much buzz and attention she has right now.

I wonder if anyone who is airing now or comes later like Winslet, Kidman, McCarthy, Erivo, Chastain, Mbedu, West and Olsen will just be fighting for the nomination because (and I know it’s the end of February so of course anything can happen unlike on the drama and comedy side) it’s looking like Series and Actress are going to be a two horse race between I May Destroy You and The Queen’s Gambit.

The buzzed about writing of It’s a Sin and the potential buzz for The Underground Railroad might be the closest there is in terms of opposition to Coel in Writing but I am very confident that at this point she’s the by far and away frontrunner and it’s not even close. It’s hard to see her losing when she’s only getting stronger and stronger (as she should!)

FYC:

"The Good Fight" and "The Other Two" in all categories.
