The 2% rule is perfectly fine. Expect the membership to eventually expand both Comedy and Drama Series to ten nominees each.July 16, 2019 at 5:33 pm #1202979883
“There is neither a Santa Claus nor an Easter bunny, and there are no angels watching over us. Things just happen for no reason. And nothing makes any sense.” Veronica Mars season 2, episode 22, ‘Not Pictured”
Sorta like today’s nomination debacle in comedy.
The problem is that stans of fringe choices like Russian Doll, Dead to Me and Fleabag scream to the high heavens and then the saps at the Academy feel the need to expand the category to Oscar Best Picture proportions when they don’t need to. 6 nominees is enough. Especially this year.July 16, 2019 at 5:35 pm #1202979888
SNUB: Anyone not named Ted Danson from The Good Place
We love that the best comedy on network TV finally got a series nomination, but this is becoming an annual problem. Ted Danson is a living legend. But why can’t we spread the Good Place wealth? We’re three seasons in now and that’s two nominations for Danson and — checks notes — none for the rest of the regular cast? (At least Maya Rudolph got another guest nod.) William Jackson Harper? Kristen Bell?!?! The real crime was skipping D’Arcy Carden for Best Supporting Actress. The nomination co-announcer had a brilliant season-three episode in which she basically imitated the rest of the cast to perfection. She offers that kind of comedy master class on network TV and you’re going to make her announce her own snub? Sorry. You’re all going to the Bad Place.July 16, 2019 at 5:38 pm #1202979893
Tis an outrage Guest 2018! Once again the industry ignores the populist demand and goes for obscure art house shows! Sad!
"Here's a wonderfully b*tchy post from Montana82...." - Tom O'Neill Emmy Prediction Slugfest August 1st, 2019July 16, 2019 at 5:44 pm #1202979897
This hasn’t been mentioned yet, but both Bojack Horsemen and Big Mouth got their first animated series nominations!July 16, 2019 at 6:01 pm #1202979926
So, here are the 100/1 odds (In the Comedy categories) that actually got nominated.
Surprisingly, there was at least one 100/1 nominee in every major comedy category we could predict. Also, the Comedy Supporting Actress streak of getting at least one 100/1 nominee every year (We can check) is still intact

- Outstanding Comedy Series: Schitt’s Creek
- Outstanding Lead Actress: Catherine O’Hara – Schitt’s Creek
- Outstanding Lead Actor: Eugene Levy – Schitt’s Creek
- Outstanding Supporting Actress: Sian Clifford – Fleabag, Sarah Goldberg – Barry (99/1)
- Outstanding Supporting Actor: Anthony Carrigan – Barry
- Outstanding Guest Actress: Fiona Shaw – Fleabag, Kristin Scott Thomas – Fleabag
- Outstanding Guest Actor: Robert De Niro – SNL, Rufus Sewell – Marvellous Mrs Maisel
The one thing that’s positively frightening from today?
Network TV shows are hanging on for dear life by the hair on their chinny chin chin. As much as the Good Place was jobbed again and This is Us rallied from getting hosed last year (sort of), that. What happens next year when TGP leaves? No network comedies at all, then.
Some brave new world, indeed.July 16, 2019 at 6:20 pm #1202979953
SNL taking all these acting slots (especially in guest) is tiring, and taking away from great performances in actual comedy series! I always get upset about this each year.July 16, 2019 at 6:24 pm #1202979964
VEEP only 9 nominations 😕July 16, 2019 at 6:45 pm #1202980022
I am sooooooooo happy that Schitt’s Creek finally got the Emmy nominations that it deserved for series, O’Hara and Eugene Levy. Dan Levy and Annie Murphy should have been nominated as well, but I expect them to make it next year.
I wish that Jenifer Lewis would have made it in Supporting Actress for black-ish.July 16, 2019 at 6:51 pm #1202980042
I mean have you seen a better category?July 16, 2019 at 6:58 pm #1202980055
Yes. One with D’Arcy Carden, Gillian Anderson and Jameela Jamil in it. With Sarah Goldberg, Olivia Colman and Marin Hinkle nowhere near it. And zero SNL’ers.July 16, 2019 at 6:58 pm #1202980057

I’m still pissed that Will Arnett hasn’t been nominated for his voice over work, I honestly think his performance is good enough to warrant being nominated for lead actor in a comedy series.
At least he got a nomination as a producer, maybe it can win.

But so-called fringe contenders don’t get double digit nominations.July 16, 2019 at 7:06 pm #1202980076
I’ll be glad when the Academy stops throwing awards at Julia Louis Dreyfus. Enough is enough!!!!
And I don’t know what Jenifer Lewis has to do to get a nomination! Come on now!
These SNL nominations every year are a bit much. Bring back the Variety performance category.
