The problem is that stans of fringe choices like Russian Doll, Dead to Me and Fleabag scream to the high heavens and then the saps at the Academy feel the need to expand the category to Oscar Best Picture proportions when they don’t need to. 6 nominees is enough. Especially this year.

But so-called fringe contenders don’t get double digit nominations.

I’ll be glad when the Academy stops throwing awards at Julia Louis Dreyfus. Enough is enough!!!!

And I don’t know what Jenifer Lewis has to do to get a nomination! Come on now!

These SNL nominations every year are a bit much. Bring back the Variety performance category.

I still can’t believe Schitt’s Creek got nominated not only for its leads, but also for Series. How did we miss this?

Fleabag hugely over-performing is melting my heart. It’s a shame Scott was snubbed, but he was in a tough category. Sean freaking Clifford! I’d never thought it could happen. Voters are definitely watching both Fleabag and Barry. Their supporting nominees is my favorite part of today’s nominations. I mean, it’s like a passionate fan chose his favorite actors for Emmy nominations.

Can’t believe Veep  missed a directing nomination. Friendly advice for your predictions: the Catskills episode is directed by Daniel Palladino and is ranked higher than his wife.

I am always baffled about the constant shut out of Jenifer Lewis because she is definitely worthy of nominations for black-ish and she has had episodes that would have made outstanding submissions.

And sometimes you have things happen like New York Jets picking Ken O’Brien from Cal State Sacramento when Dan Marino was still on the board in the 1983 NFL draft. Without any plausible explanation except that these Academy voters just really aren’t that smart.

I watched Veep this past season and I cannot think of a reason why Tony Hale should have been nominated. I still think that his work on Arrested Development was much superior than what he has done and won for on Veep.

    My thoughts

    1. Schitt’s Creek’s performance (especially Catherine O’Hara) is one of the best Emmy surprises ever.

    2. Glow out of series broke my heart. Thank god for Betty Gilpin.

    3. Fleabag and Barry over performed so much that I initially thought the race for the series win was between those 2 but then I realized an over performance for Maisel was highly unlikely since it was expected to land everywhere. I think this is Barry vs Maisel with the latter as the current frontrunner, despite the (outrageous) writing snub.

    4. Veep isn’t even in the top 3 for series imo. What a turn of event. Louis-Dreyfus is still winning.

    5. A lot of you are glad that they dropped the perennial nominees in lead actress to make room for fresh blood but I can honestly say I think Fonda, Tomlin, Kemper and Adlon are more deserving than Lyonne and Applegate.

    6. What the fuck is PEN15 and why did it stole The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’s writing nomination?

    7. Gina Rodriguez will leave her Jane the Virgin days without a single Emmy nomination. I can’t deal.

    8. They did D’arcy Carden dirty!!! Cruel.

    9. Adam Sandler… embarrassing

    10. Current prediction: The MMM wins the supporting categories, Barry wins actor, Veep wins actress, Fleabag wins writing, whatever wins directing (Barry, Fleabag, The MMM) wins series.

    11. This is actual footage of Tituss Burgess coming to snatch the limited series/TV movie supporting actor Emmy next year cause he knows damn well he gave one of the best TV performance of the decade and he simply can’t leave this role Emmyless.

    GIVE LENA HEADEY HER EMMY

The noms clearly show voters voted for things they watched (eg GOT) – far less name checking this year.

On the comedy side, the fact that Sian Clifford got in means the Academy is clearly watching Fleabag, along with Barry, Maisel and Russian Doll, and a passionate fanbase for Schitt’s Creek.

The rest are fillers imo, including Veep surprisingly.

But so-called fringe contenders don’t get double digit nominations.

If anything, The Good Place is a fringe contender in that category. I only have it ranked ahead of Schitta Creek.

Big fan of Better Call Saul, Sex Education, Barry, BoJack Horseman, and, especially, Survivor

An OMSTAIN! alert, then 😀 And this is my last comment on such a punk-ass day. I allow myself verbal sturm und drang until a little after midnight, then I move on.

Just realized that SNL was virtually shut out of the acting categories (save for Kate McKinnon) and I am absolutely THRILLED. I hated when the Emmys switched them to the supporting categories. They have no business there. I wish they would change that back.

And the 2nd season was way better than the first, how tragic

They did D’arcy Carden dirty!!! Cruel.

Yeah they took a huge dildo and fucked her right up the ass. She’s the new Nick Offerman.

Pen15 is deserving, but in terms of two female improv-alums writing a semi-autobiographic comedy, this spot belonged to the finale of Broad  City. TMMM deserved a nom too tho. Comedy is overflowing with good writing considering the autueur nature of it, so I understand why a direction-heavy show like Maisel missed out for other shows where writing is the highlight.
