In the last 6 days I watched the full seasons of Maisel, Fleabag, Schitt’s Creek, Barry, and Russian Doll. Always cram to try to see who really truly deserves it and who to unleash my passion for. As usual, Goldderby’s users and editors are FULL OF IT when it comes to the odds/hype and the actual performances.

Luke Kirby deserves so much better in the odds than what he is getting. He was intoxicating and mesmerizing in the finale as Lenny Bruce. He’s what the GUEST category SHOULD be about. Not A listers slumming it up in uneven SNL episodes.

Also, Jane Lynch has no business winning.

Kristin Scott Thomas being in 6th when she gives the best performance in her category is a disgrace to this site and why I will once again be issuing a primal scream post to performers branch voters who view this site. It’s disgraceful that this site is so misleading when it comes to who actually deserves to win. 6th??!!! MENOPAUSE!

Catherine O’Hara and Phoebe Waller-Bridge should tie for Best Actress.

Absolutely loved Anthony Carrigan’s NOHO Hank. It’s the type of zany character that should win in supporting!

While Olivia Colman is funny in her limited time, Sian Clifford is also very good and has a bigger role.

Do not understand why Marin Hinkle is nominated. She’s just sort of….there. She’s not bad but she doesn’t grab my attention at all. Not funny either.

Awardswatch forum poll about comedy guest actress has Sandra Oh leading it by a distance. Is she indeed deserving? I think she’s winning here just so they get rid of her and her overdue narrative lol.

I think Jane Lynch will win, she is a academy fav.

Than why didn’t she win last year when Maisel swept everything and the secret was out by than that Tiff Haddish wasn’t funny?

Even if she didn’t win last year, her performance this past season was even better.

Like I said in our comedy guest slugfest, I see Maya Rudolph taking this in a Margo Martindale way.  She is at that place in her career where she has enough goodwill to win a random Emmy and The Good Place is that show like The Americans that the Emmys probably feel that they should award somehow.

As for the ongoing discussion about Barry being too dramatic and that being why Atlanta lost, I maintain the harsh stance that I took early last year when Atlanta was the heavy frontrunner over The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.  (It was still a soft frontrunner by the time that the ceremony rolled around.)  I would have preferred that Atlanta win over The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel of course, but I did not see voters going for a show about poor black people over one about rich white people.  Barry is about white actors and it doubles down on its steak-eater appeal with its Breaking Bad-inspired machismo.  Moonlight did beat La La Land (and that will happen more going forward), but that is still the exception and not the rule for now, plus the voting system was different.  Also worth noting about the Atlanta argument is that not only did Atlanta lose to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as I had anticipated, but Atlanta surprised me by also losing to Barry (in the actor categories), so any reference to Atlanta under-performing at the Emmys is a point for Barry because Atlanta under-performed directly as a result of Barry over-performing.

I also think that the idea that the Emmys have a bias for sitcoms over dramedies is just a relic of the old voting system.  The tape system favoured overtly comedic material, the panelists tended to be retirees and thus had more traditional sensibilities and the preferential ballots were penalizing.  The more diverse members of Producers Guild were meanwhile just ticking off their favourites, managing to award both Orange is the New Black and Transparent, while the Emmys simply continued to award Modern Family.  Finally, dramedies are in vogue like never before.  This is the first year in Emmy history that the majority of the Outstanding Comedy Series nominees are dramedies.  Last year was the first that more than two had ever been nominated simultaneously.  Now would be the time when a darker show would win.

Let’s just be clear if Rudolph wins it would be very well deserved.

Everyone is talking about how undeserving Shaw’s nomination for Killing Eve is but I just want to point out that she is just as undeserving for Fleabag . Kristin Scott Thomas should win from what I’ve seen.

Banned for making a fake movie poster

Shaw was pitch perfect in her guest spot on Fleabag. It’s harder than it looks to come in cold and nail the timing on that show.

Also she gets to deliver the line “do you want to f*ck god” straight amazing.

But of course KST deserves the win here. That monologue was emphatic.

I wouldn’t be upset if Maya won her first Emmy. But The Good Place looks to be in Blackish/Kimmy Schmidt territory. Zero evidence the academy is really watching it and not much passion to get the votes to pull off wins. It seems to be there because there are some open slots.

Passion rules the day in this new system. And when the passion is there it SWEEPS when it’s at it’s most buzzed (Maisel/Big Little Lies/Handmaid’s).

The most passion I have seen online from the INDUSTRY for any show is Fleabag. And it manifested in the nominations.

    I can easily see a Phoebe Waller-Bridge/Olivia Colman/Kristin Scott Thomas check off ala Moss/Dowd/Bledel Kidman/Dern Brosnahan/Borstein.

Either way I am glad to see some other voices supporting KST and speaking up in this thread. It’s always so infuriating when I finally see all the nominees to see how skewed the odds are to popularity or familiar names/shows/past winners. KST has no business being 6th here. She’s on the hot buzzed show and has the guest spot to back up a win.

I just finished Dead to Me. Applegate best thing about it but I HATED it. Bad writing, stupid twists, and if the Cardellini character pulled half the crap she pulls in this show she would get her ASS beat. Sigh.

So now that I saw all the lead actress comedy shows I can full throated and enthusiastically endorse a win for either Catherine O’Hara or Phoebe Waller-Bridge. In a perfect world O’Hara wins actress and PWB wins writing and producing.

    QUOTE

I have two theories as to how Jane Lynch lost Guest Actress in a Comedy last year to Tiffany Haddish:

    1. The popularity of Tiffany Haddish or

    2. Jane Lynch and Molly Shannon (my choice) split the votes. Shannon and Lynch gave the best performances of the nominees.
