People are seriously discounting the level of performance Jerome accomplished because his career is still young. He literally embodied Korey Wise. It’s honestly one of the greatest performances by a young actor in television history (not even exaggerating).

71st Nominees: Outstanding Limited Series Emmy clips

Strong category. Even the comments can’t decide between Chernobyl and When They See Us, lmao.

No one’s discounting Jerome. As for Harris, I think he gave one of the sincerest performances in TV of the past few years; perfectly calibrated and humane in a way that isn’t overpowering. Valery Legasov was an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances and that was what Harris gave us. And that’s the beauty of his performance, seemingly unremarkable on the surface but so much more potent if one digs a little deeper.

This is nothing compared to what Jerome had to do.

Well, then Downton Abbey is another show that you haven’t seen, because there is NOTHING SOAPY aboyt the performances there. You are also completely unaware about the British way of acting and what all of them know to do. And also completely unaware about Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Jim Carter and Kevin Doyle careers in TV, cinema and theatre, they could have played this role just as good.

I am a Bulgarian/Colombian, so I am not the person you have to teach about Russia and communism, I even can speak a little bit of Russian myself. Many Russians disliked Chernobyl, other praised it, so this argument is irrelevant. If you look for accuracy, you do it in Russian, not in British English. I, just like the entire Academy, have not seen The Terror, but Harris impressed me much more in The Crown and in Mad Men.

I don’t understand why you think I am dissing the acting on Downton Abbey? Because I called the show what it is? A (classily executed) soap? It’s one of my favourite comfort shows (the first season is one of the best ever executed dramas of its type) but I think even Fellowes would laugh if you tried to read nuance into that show. This is a separate discussion from the acting abilities of the cast who do a lot of heavy lifting especially when the quality of the writing dipped in later season. Also shows about repressed characters =/= restrained acting.

What I was taking issue with was your painting of British actors with the same brush. Just because most actors went to acting school or sound/ are posh doesn’t mean there’s a “British way of acting”. The British acting scene is multicultural and filled with a diverse range of actors which you would know if you actually watched shows other than Downton Abbey.

Also nobody is trying to teach you anything (not sure why communism is coming into this). Those examples were based on interviews with the production team (majority of the crew consisted of people from former Soviet countries hence the commitment to authenticity across the board) and the countless articles that have been written about the reactions from people who lived through the incident and their praise for the show’s immense attention to detail. A Russian journalist, Slava Malamud, literally did twitter threads (which went viral) of each episode to point out how well the show nailed the minutiae of the production design and behaviourial aspects of the acting and why the characters felt believable of that era.

Chernobyl was made for a mass market English speaking audience; how sad the state of content would be if stories could only be told in the character’s native language; not because they wouldn’t be beautifully told but because I doubt they would be told at all – look at where most of the content funding in English speaking countries go to. I for one am thankful they did this in English or I may never have watched the show (although tbh the Russian version of Sherlock Holmes with Vasily Livanov which is the only Russian language series I have watched is possibly my favourite version).

In any case, I’m sorry to have derailed the thread. This will all be over in a couple of days and we will just have to live with knowing that we disagree on a lot of things lol.

Not only is Chernobyl vs WTSU an epic showdown, but I think any of these series could win in any other year. As much as we’ve banded off into certain tribes in this category, we have been truly blessed as opposed to the anemic offerings last year (although this one would be for the ages if The Act made it in as well)

It’s weird to think about how limited series were on the decline several years ago., hence why the Television Academy merged the Miniseries and TV Movie categories. Now, there’s a ton of limited series being made every year.

This has got to be the best Limited category in recent history, maybe ever. And with Unbelievable already in the mix for next year, the Limited category is quickly turning into the most interesting one as well

The thing is, while this is all true, does that really match up to Jerome’s performance to the extent that you’d support Harris over him? To me, the only justifications are that he’s overdue after missing for The Crown and The Terror, and that Jerome is supporting until the last episode (and doesn’t ‘anchor’ the show in the same way Harris does). Because Jerome is undeniable based on the performance itself.

Yes! I couldn’t even think about which nominee I could have replaced for it, but it was excellent. At least King and Arquette made it in.

I would take out sharp objects personally for The act. I dont think sharp objects is bad, I didnt love it as much as the others and the act. But this year is so strong. I no complaints over Sharp objects making it.

71st Nominees: Outstanding Limited Series Emmy clips Strong category. Even the comments can’t decide between Chernobyl and When They See Us, lmao.

God this category is so good. I have a hard time believing any year after this will be as good as this one.

    1. Chernobyl / When They See Us (maybe I’ll decide later lol)
    2. Sharp Objects (loved this clip but using the final scene would’ve been perfect)
    3. Fosse/Verdon
    4. Escape at Dannemora (almost put this above FV but then that end ruined it lol)

“Sharp Objects” is rightfully where it belongs in Limited Series. In another year, it could have won outright.
