Fosse/Verdon for me in a word was “sleepy”. I found it unwatchable actually, so I hope that I do not have to watch more. I was suspicious that FX only provided two episodes with the embargo ending the next day. I received eight episodes of previous FX limited series The Assasination of Gianni Versace months in advance. The editing and sound were a mess, although the latter was supposedly not final. I was laughing during a mumbling scene between Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams. I paused halfway through the first episode to watch the trailer, which I had previously avoided because I did not want to be spoiled. I had to see what the hype was about and the trailer is actually accurate. I think that you have to be already invested in the real-life people and their works, whereas I went in without any familiarity. This show is for the theatre fanatics and I would not say that it is going to convert anyone else. I did not see Norbert Leo Butz or Margaret Qualley in the first two episodes. This was very much a two-hander.March 13, 2019 at 3:44 pm #1202815445
Starting with scores of 91, 60 and 50 on Metacritic.March 13, 2019 at 6:45 pm #1202815582
I love Indie Wire’s hype of Williams, though.March 13, 2019 at 7:24 pm #1202815633
The trailers weren’t promising, so this should have been expected. Poor White Michelle, still awardsless.March 13, 2019 at 10:52 pm #1202815740
I honestly didn’t even know there was a trailer; I thought everyone was going in blind lol. But I’m watching it now, and why everyone had high hopes after viewing it is beyond me since it was pretty dry.
