I’m asking since I wasn’t following at the times.
I know Friends never really was an awards favorite like, let’s say, Frasier or Seinfeld.
But I was really surprised to discover, through imdb, how much it was ignored for season 3 and 4, when its popularity was probably still at the top.
Apart from the Golden Globes who nominated it in both 1997 and 1998 no other awards group followed.
For two consecutive years (1997 and 1998) Lisa Kudrow was the show only nomination at the Emmys!
At the SAG awards, where the cast won in 1996, they were not nominated again until 1999!
No nominations during those years at the Directing or Writing Guild either.
And, I don’t know if they matter at the times, but Viewers for Quality TV didn’t nominated the show between 1996 and 2000, and TCA did the same between 1995 and 1999.
So my question is: did people at the time think the show was dropped in quality after the first two seasons?

Personally, I watched the entire show many times, and I can agree season 3 wasn’t solid as the first two (but surely not to justify a complete shutout apart from Kudrow, especially considering the few contenders airing in that period, in comparison with today).
But season 4! C’mon, I think would have deserved a series win!
Phoebe pregancy storyline, the apartments switch, Joey and Chandler triangle with Kathy, Emily and Ross relationship, Rachel and Joshua.
The One With The Embryos was one of the best, if not the best, episode the show ever produced.
Jennifer Aniston gave a classic Emmy winning performance in The One With the Fake Party.
The season finale in London had two big jaw dropping moments.
And the list goes on and on…what about Aniston and Schwimmer performances in season 3 The Morning After? Am I the only who watched?

Pleas I wanna hear your opinion.
What was going on with Friends in those two years?

I like all seasons of Friends, but I agree that season 3 was a drop in quality. However I really don’t know how to explain season 4, maybe it was good only for the ones who watched the whole season instead of random eps?

This article is a Top 10 TV of 98. Here’s what it says about Friends (S4B-5A):

    5) “Friends” (NBC) – This show has returned to what it was its first season: a funny sitcom about people we’d like to have as friends of our own. This year the writing was sharp, the characters grew and, mercifully, the sexual innuendo got toned down.

I think the show works better as a binge.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

I still love this show as a whole but seasons 4 to 6 were the best for me. Season 1 was the weakest for me

    Thank you for the article!
    It was really interesting..

I would rank the seasons like this:

    1. Season 4
    2. Season 2
    3. Season 1
    4. Season 5
    5. Season 8
    6. Season 3
    7. Season 6
    8. Season 7

(REAL AND DEFINITIVE DROP IN QUALITY)

    9. Season 9
    10. Season 10.
