Several cast members do well each year, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Joanna Froggatt, Jim Carter and Bredan Coyle have all gotten Emmy nominations (was Elizabeth McGovern nominated for the first season? Can’t remember…)

But there are quite a few cast members who deserve recognition as well. Rob James-Collier (Thomas Barrow) has been having a terrific season this year (he ought to have been nominated for the 2nd and 3rd seasons, then they gave him nothing much to do in the 4th season, but he has done great work this season!). I would love to see him on the list for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series! (:

Several actresses deserve nominations in the Supporting Actress category for this season: Laura Carmichael (Edith) has been really superb in her baby girl storyline this season; Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes) is long overdue for recognition as the touching and sensible downstairs matriarch; Penelope Wilton (Isabel Crawley) holds her own with the formidable Maggie Smith’s Violet; Elizabeth McGovern has really shined this season as Cora – and I could go on with Raquel Cassidy, Lesley Nicol, and past nominees Joanne Froggatt and Dame Maggie Smith. Truly superb!

One of the things that has taken my breath away this year is how brilliantly directed, written, and edited the show has been. I finish an episode of the show thinking how I have enjoyed every single scene and how marvelously well produced the  show already is.

I get that there is an american bias at the Emmys, but I am glad that Downton Abbey gets recognition with nominations – and even a few wins – each season. I hope there will be room for several more of the actors at this year’s Emmys! (:

Will take anything and anyone on Broadchurch’s terrific second season over any of this.

    Matthew Fox: 1 nomination
    Matthew Rhys: 0 nominations
    Hugh Bonneville: 2 nominations

The cast has gotten more than its fair share at the Emmys.

On behalf of Monica Potter, Dean Norris, Tatiana Maslaney and Matthew Rhys to name very few, sorry but no. This show deserves to be treated like most other shows at the emmys, decline after a while…

Laura Carmichael is the only un-nominated castmember who maybe deserves to get nominated. She really was incredible this season. Other than them, eh. Even most of the nominated castmembers probably won’t deserve it this year. Honestly personally, Carmichael might be the only castmember id nominate this season. Smith has actually had her best storyline in a while, but she’s gotten her due. Michele Dockery officially does nothing but be mean to edith and be a tease to every good looking guy that character meets. Hugh Bonneville bleh and Jim carter’s time has hopefully passed. Hes done nothing new. Joanne Frogatt is good but that whole rape/murder storyline is so bad and was so poorly handled that I hate anytime any part of it gets rewarded.

And I agree with what everyone’s said. There are so many far more deserving people who have never been nominated than members of this cast (who now all have 2 SAG awards, don’t feel too bad). Even my favorite Carmichael would be battling it out for that Drama Supporting Actress, which if I had a ballot is my most competitice category this year.

Jim Carter has how many nominations? He deserved none of them.
Michelle Dockery has how many nominations? She deserved none of them.
Hugh Bonneville has how many nominations? He deserved none of them.
Joanne Froggatt maybe deserved one nomination.
Maggie Smith maybe deserved one or two nominations, but certainly no wins.
Brendan Coyle did not deserve to be nominated.

I think they have been amply rewarded.

I don’t recall whether Laura Carmichael, who is like a secret weapon for Downton Abbey (she is sublime in the role of Edith), has ever been on the nomination ballot. I don’t recall, yes, but I’m thinking that Downton Abbey was concentrated on who it figured could make the official cut.

^ Honestly just based on how the show treats Edith it would not surprise me at all to find out that Julian Fellows treats the actress the same way.
