Last April a crew member revealed that Game of Thrones had wrapped 55 night shoots while filming a battle. Media outlets around the world ran stories saying the final season’s battle took twice as long as the 25-day shoot for season 6’s climactic Battle of the Bastards. This wildly understated what really happened. The 55 nights were only for the battle’s outdoor scenes at the Winterfell set. Filming then moved into the studio, where Sapochnik continued shooting the same battle for weeks after that.
“It’s brutal,” Dinklage says. “It makes the Battle of the Bastards look like a theme park.”
The battle doesn’t have just one focus, either, but rather intercuts between multiple characters involved in their own survival storylines that each feels like its own genre. “Having the largest battle doesn’t sound very exciting — it actually sounds pretty boring,” Benioff says. “Part of our challenge, and really, Miguel’s challenge, is how to keep that compelling… we’ve been building toward this since the very beginning, it’s the living against the dead, and you can’t do that in a 12-minute sequence.”
To help pull it off, the production hugely expanded its set for the Stark ancestral home of Winterfell, adding a towering castle exterior, a larger courtyard, and more interconnected rooms and ramparts. Strolling around the new Winterfell is like wandering a sprawling, immersive medieval resort compared with its previous Days Inn-like scale. The ground is covered with snow and blood. The air is thick with smoke from the fire pits. You can turn any direction and only see more Winterfell. It’s easy to feel like you’ve somehow wandered into Westeros
HBO be wise and not oversubmit!! This could be the easiest Emmy in their history, if not for vote splitting

Same, but RIP in pieces to the budget that has to support the Doom. If the meme was that the direwolves were cut to pay for the CGI for three dragons I can only imagine what it’ll take to produce tons of dragons + 500-plus miles of volcanic explosions + tsunamis + etc.
I guess that would be in the series finale… The budget would be YUGE from the pilot but what make the concept of Empire of Ash interesting is the politics of the Freehold of Valyria.November 2, 2018 at 9:07 pm #1202667167
Naomi in the Westeros universe?!?!?!?!? Best news of the whole year. As for Jon Snow being the only lead… fuck that, who has given the majority of the most iconic scenes on this show? The most popular character of the series is and will be Daenerys Targaryen.
Most of the credit goes to Emilia Clarke. If anyone (besides Headey) deserves loads of work after this show, it’s Clarke. Anyone could have Megan Foxxd the crap out of this character. She has pretty much the whole world behind her. Sad nothing has really taken off for her yet. Disney could really utilize her in many ways, and it’s sad she was in the worst Star Wars movie made.

The Red Wedding has nothing on Season 8, apparently
Nutter directed the infamous Season 3 episode “The Rains of Castemere,” which contained the Red Wedding. When a fan asked how the new season would compare to that iconic moment from the series, Nutter replied, “As far as Season 8 compared to the Red Wedding I just have to tell you – hang onto your seat cause it’s going to be special.”
First, BotB and now this. I don’t know how crazy things are going to be if S8 will outdo the show’s most iconic moments like the Red Wedding and Battle of the Bastards (which seems to be what everyone involved is saying). No wonder they brought Nutter and Sapochnik back.November 14, 2018 at 10:07 am #1202674952
I had been thinking that all of the episodes would occupy ninety-minute timeslots, but Nutter merely thinks that they will all be over sixty minutes? Hmm.November 14, 2018 at 10:25 am #1202674956

I think Casey Bloys (HBO programming president) dismissed the rumour that each episode will be 90 minutes or longer a while back. As far as I remember, he said that all episodes won’t be feature length. I think they’ll most likely fall in the 60-90 minutes range.November 15, 2018 at 7:22 am #1202675564
Do you guys think Djawadi has a strong chance of repeating this year?
In 2018 suddenly the Academy started showing him the love he deserves and his biggest threat in this category was actually himself… With no Westworld this year, and this being a final season (plus we all damn know in advance he will deserve it), I can see people rallying behind him. I guess you can say Jeff Beal is a threat, but this season of HoC wasn’t really acclaimed in general so I don’t know if it will shine there of all categories
