So this was inspired by a thread about Buffy at the Emmys. Glee won 6 Emmys over it’s 6 year run but I was wondering why it did not win more? The show did dip after season 2 and had a drastic dip after season 4 but I still think season 1 should have at least won the top prize at the Emmys.

    Please share any thoughts below.

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")

I think there’s quite a few reasons for this, the main ones being that it was very unlucky to debut the same year as Modern Family and that it was never really the kind of show you’d expect the Emmys to embrace.

A smaller, more arguable, one that I do think worth mentioning is the main cast’s woeful episode submissions record under an unforgiving tape system. With the exception of Lynch’s “Power of Mandonna” and “Feud” submissions, they were all too dramatic or, frankly, lacking in screentime to win. Not saying they would have won but they would have at least given themselves a fighting chance on a system that sometimes awarded the randomest of winners. The greatest example of this being Lea Michele’s “Sectionals” submission which she presumably submitted solely for her performance of Don’t Rain on My Parade even though she barely does anything else in it. If she’d submitted the pilot or especially “Laryngitis”, she could have threatened Edie Falco. Similarly, Chris Colfer’s “Grilled Cheesus”, which undoubtedly won him the Globe, didn’t have him do one funny thing so he was never gonna win.

As for the creative arts wins, a lot of the ones they might have won for the first or second season like costumes and art direction (now production design) were before those categories got broken up so it was competing against these big period pieces rather than contemporary stuff.

Glee deserved so much more in terms of nominations and wins. The fact that Naya Rivera never received a nom (at the very least) and Lea Michele was dropped so quickly (and never won) is just ridiculous.

The show will remain one of the most eye-opening, groundbreaking and trail-blazing shows EVER. I watched my first episode when I was nine years old. I have never heard of the word “gay” before, and now I’m openly gay, have been since 2013. The show has an impact on my life that I never thought a TV show could have. I still occasionally re-watch episodes when I’m down in the dumps.

This is an interesting piece of analysis. I wonder if Glee would have swept the Emmys had the new system been in place. I mean after all we saw Maisel and Barry sweep in 2018 and both are dramedies.

I think at least for the first two seasons the shows should have won/or been nominated for these awards, those in bold are awards I think it should have won.

Me to the haters who are disturbing our great peace in this forum:

If the Emmys were right all the time she would have multiple Emmys already.

I find it funny how people have the time to go to an appreciation forum of a show and heckle it, even when they probably haven’t seen it all…

I find it incredibly satisfying that the people coming out against this perfectly innocent thread are the users who have repeatedly shown themselves to have the dullest taste in these forums.

    Also:

Objectively speaking, Glee was never good for more than five minutes into the first episode.

You need to crack open a dictionary and learn the meaning of “objectively”

I haven’t watched this show in years but Jane Lynch was so great in it.

I just said that I’d given to Glee all the Modern Family Emmys for S1, so

ALSO, Glee has never been great.

I’m just going to leave it there.

Just took a look throughout your GoldDerby Awards ballots and I don’t take offense at getting dragged on my taste by someone who voted for Renee Zellweger in Judy and Meryl Streep in The Post as the best performances of the decade.

Lynch should have won for all seasons and Lea Michele deserved better, at least 2 Emmys and 1 Golden Globe IMO
