It is not the lesser quality that has me concerned; it is that the buzz arguably turned toxic. People were tepid on shows like The Loudest Voice and Catch-22, whereas people actively disliked the final Game of Thrones season for example and I wonder if The Undoing is verging into that kind of territory. Critics’ Choice had three extra slots and I do not debate that The Undoing is in the top eight for the Globes.

But has it verged into that territory? Personally, I don’t think it has. I don’t think you can compare the ending to an eight-season show — which happened to be the biggest show in the world — to the ending of a six-part miniseries, which set up expectations that were nowhere near as high. The IMDb scores would also suggest that this comparison isn’t really warranted — even The Undoing’s finale score, 7,2, is far above Game of Thrones’ 4.0.

It is possible that it has not. It is still in my predictions as I figure out what its replacement is. The Game of Thrones finale was just the first example of bad buzz that popped into my head (and its was for sure much worse), but it is the same reason why I dropped Lily Collins from my Globe predictions. Sure, Emily in Paris has a 7.1 on IMDb, but the discourse around it is so negative that I feel that the Globes might be making a statement if they nominate her. Hillbilly Elegy is the big film this year with toxic buzz. Maybe these things will be fine. Time will tell. It is not only bad movies and shows that can get derailed by bad buzz. Zero Dark Thirty comes to mind.

Yeah, I think you really have to pick a lane this year: either you go with the critics consensus or you go against it — I happen to be doing the latter. Hence, I am predicting everything from Hillbilly Elegy to The Undoing (which isn’t even panned). I think critics are becoming increasingly snobby and are thus distancing themselves from both the industry and general audiences. But I could be totally wrong!

I think it’s quite possible that they only nominate Grant. His category is the weakest and he’s arguably the most (or only) acclaimed aspect of the show along with Dumzweni.

The real conundrum I am having with The Undoing though is (and this is what I felt when I was watching it) that it feels like a show that would have done well awards wise around 2010. It was an international hit and does star two of the biggest stars on the planet but in a year where almost all its competitors are from more acclaimed hit shows that have something to say about the world today I am unsure a murder mystery about two white people trying to get around the legal justice system is going to hold up with awards bodies. We talk about its star power on here because of how shows like The Morning Show and Little Fires Everywhere have performed and that can help The Undoing (it’s literally the only reason I am predicting Kidman) however TMS was one of the first MeToo shows and LFE explored white privilege and systemic racism in America. What does The Undoing explore? The Loudest Voice at least was about Roger Ailes and Fox News and starred Russell Crowe in his first television role. Catch-22 (another international hit like The Undoing) was a show based on a famous satirical war novel and featured the television return of George Clooney. They all had a novelty factor that The Undoing doesn’t have.

It also doesn’t help that if the HFPA want to vote for a HBO show they could easily gravitate towards the more acclaimed I May Destroy You. A show that not only has something to say but is also a British show (a type of show that has almost always gotten nominated in this category i.e. Chernobyl, A Very English Scandal, Top of the Lake : China GirlThe Night ManagerThe DresserWolf Hall).

Who do you think it will win? I’m also on the fence with Mahershala Ali and Brendan Gleeson for the win. Interesting enough I thought Gleeson was DOA, but since the attacks on real life’s capitol, i feel like he might snatch it.

My money is on gleeson. Supporting actor and actress are so open it will be interesting to see who even gets nominated

I honestly won’t be surprised if Slater won. But that won’t happen if Peet misses.

This thread is the only place where I remember there is a second season of Dirty John. Did Peet or Slater campaign for HFPA? Otherwise they might not know this season’s existence, just saying.

Slater became a thing here because he attended an HFPA event, but I haven’t heard anywhere else about the show or Peet. This reminds me of Stateless, a non-factor I’ve been hearing about literally only on these forums.

Did Peet or Slater campaign for HFPA?

They did a lot of interviews over the Summer with HFPA members and some of them encourage their followers to watch it for Peet’s performance. Slater also attended the HFPA banquet.

I literally was about to post my predictions with Bridgerton over Ozark but then didn’t because I thought I’d be called crazy but then I saw AFI nominated Bridgeton over Ozark

How strong is the correlation between the Globes’ picks and the AFI’s picks again? Because Unorthodox & The Good Lord Bird getting in makes me want to reconsider my limited series choices.
