How strong is the correlation between the Globes’ picks and the AFI’s picks again? Because Unorthodox & The Good Lord Bird getting in makes me want to reconsider my limited series choices.
50/50. Generally shows that are nominated at AFI tend to pop up in at least one category at the Globes but last year both Watchmen and When They See Us went from AFI noms to Globe shutouts.
FYC OSCARS : PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN IN ALL CATEGORIES (ESP. ACTRESS – Carey Mulligan AND ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY — EMERALD FENNELL), VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", ESSIE DAVIS FOR "BABYTEETH"
January 26, 2021 at 4:35 am #1204002008I literally was about to post my predictions with Bridgerton over Ozark but then didn’t because I thought I’d be called crazy but then I saw AFI nominated Bridgeton over Ozark…
Those 100/1 odds look super sweet now lol. Your DA comparison also made me more sure of my Ensemble prediction at SAG. I doubt it becomes as big an acting contender as DA though.
Bridgerton has a 76 on Metacritic in a year where I feel tv critics have been harsher than usual. I think people that are not predicting it solely because it’s too ‘trashy’ for them are overdoing it. It’s not some Emily in Paris (ngl I did enjoy that show more than Bridgerton).
January 26, 2021 at 7:32 am #1204002315Apart from the frontrunners of The Queen’s Gambit, Ted Lasso, The Crown and Small Axe everything else has been swapping places at CC, AFI, Spirits etc.
Unorthodox got nominated by all aswell.

Yes! I forgot that.
I think Unorthodox is safe-ish. I am sorry Shira for ever doubting you!

Yeah I’d be shocked if it misses.
I guess I should take The Good Lord Bird out now.

I want to put in Unorthodox but the same thing happened to When They See Us (barring Spirit)
January 26, 2021 at 10:29 am #1204003019Ugh, this awards body will probably start the inevitable and undeserving Taylor-Joy sweep.
As she should.
January 26, 2021 at 1:07 pm #1204003562Taylor-Joy was great but it will be disappointing with this level of strong contenders if she sweeps her way to the Emmys.
It also won’t be good for her if she does because I can see voters getting fatigued by the time of the Emmys if she wins everything.
I am intrigued to see how The Queen’s Gambit performs at the Emmys. At the moment it’s the only lock in Series, Actress, S. Actress and Directing but every year we see how shows that sweep from the Emmys to the winter awards often suffer fatigue at SAG. Fleabag, Chernobyl, The Handmaid’s Tale.
If The Queen’s Gambit wins every winter award possible I wonder if that might actually curse it. When was the last time a show swept everything to the Emmys (I know Olive Kitteridge and Watchmen didn’t).

January 26, 2021 at 2:46 pm #1204003770Interesting how people were saying Fanning and The Great would miss but then she gets nominated for the first industry award handed out (Spirits). These nominations are going to be messy as f***. Apart from the frontrunners of The Queen’s Gambit, Ted Lasso, The Crown and Small Axe everything else has been swapping places at CC, AFI, Spirits etc.
I believe they are not saying Fanning and The Great would miss. They didnt buy overconfidence for both Fanning and The Great while they think Fanning is actually deserved her nomination and frontrunner for it. Remember the times when you predict Fanning will snatch this one before Cuoco came to the party?

I know THAT’S RIGHT

“The Queen’s Gambit”—Netflix and Vintage Contemporaries
“Unorthodox”—Netflix and Simon & SchusterHere for continued Unorthodox domination. Normal People and The Plot Against America are also nominated for the same episodes that they submitted to the Emmys, so we should assume that The Good Lord Bird will follow suit with its premiere over its finale for the Emmys.
