I am behind on making the aggregates this year, but in the meantime, let us have a thread to comment on the guilds that do not already have their own threads: ACE, MPSE, SAG, WGA.

What is going on with Unbelievable? Merritt Wever gets snubbed at SAG, then the show is shut out at the Globes and now Lisa Cholodenko misses DGA, despite winning this category recently for Olive Kitteridge.

At least, in terms of the Emmy’s, it missed to three shows that won’t be competing there next year. But yeah, still a bad miss.

Fosse/Verdon has three nominations?! It certainly deserved one but it sucks that Unbelievable was left out, especially for its first episode. At least Ava DuVernay is nominated.

    What a cluster-f.

Per Deadline.com: “Due to what the DGA calls “a re-vote related to a newly implemented electronic entry submissions process,” the series noms aren’t out today.

But just last week, the guild announced that Jill Soloway — a DGA Award winner for her work on Transparent — has had the Amazon comedy’s chances of landing one final Directors Guild of America nomination forseries hampered by an internal DGA error. “We regret to inform you that the following entry was inadvertently omitted from the Comedy Series ballot: #165a. Transparent Musicale Finale, Jill Soloway,” the DGA wrote in an email to members, offering those who wish to recast their vote in this category to do so following a link.”

How is it not a movie though? And what does that have to do with the drama category?

    DGA Nominees in Limited Series:

Ava DuVernay – When They See Us
Vince Gilligan – El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie

    Johan Renck – Chernobyl
Minkie Spiro – Fosse/Verdon: “All I Care About is Love”
    Jessica Yu – Fosse/Verdon: “Glory”

I am so happy that the Industry loves F/V as much as I do, although is not that surprising since Yo was nominated for the same episode at the Emmys, Thomas Kail was nominated for “Who’s Got the Pain” at the Emmys, “Nowadays” is far superior choice, “All I Care About Is Love” was very strong as well.

However, it is obvious that Johan Renck will win this. I do not see Gilligan winning at the Emmys.

More 72nd Directors Guild of America Award nominees:

VARIETY & NEWS SERIES: CBS Sunday Morning, Last Week Tonight, The Late Show, Real Time, Saturday Night Live

REALITY PROGRAM: American Ninja Warrior, The Chef Show, Encore!, First Responders Live, Queer Eye

CHILDREN’S PROGRAM: Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Ghostwriter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Sesame Street, Song of Parkland

COMMERCIALS (BODY OF WORK): Fredrik Bond, Spike Jonze, Mark Molloy, Ridley Scott, Dougal Wilson

STAGE MANAGER CAREER ACHIEVEMENT: Arthur E. Lewis

This is the fourth time (none consecutive) that The Amazing Race has missed in the fifteen years of the category. Surprising that A Series of Unfortunate Events was reduced to a single nomination after taking three slots last year, although it might have been a strategic decision if they are tired of losing to Sesame Street. Apple TV+ scores its first DGA nomination with Ghostwriter. Disney+ is also on the board with Encore!, which was nominated in its previous incarnation under the Emmy-winning Queer Eye director. He is competing against his old show; we shall see if name recognition gives it to Jon Favreau for The Chef Show. Exciting that the majority of the category was ineligible at the last Emmys, so the category could shake up at the next Emmys. The variety category is the same as last year, except ineligible Who is America? has been replaced by past nominee CBS Sunday Morning (instead of more recent past nominee Full Frontal). That is six consecutive nominations for Bill Maher here, which is weird because he missed the entire decade at the Emmys. Documentary Now! did not break in as it did at the Emmys, further cementing the reign of SNL, which is up for Eddie Murphy. I have emailed the DGA about Transparent.
