A Harry Potter live-action TV series is in early development at HBO Max. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that executives at the WarnerMedia-backed streamer have engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television. Sources say broad ideas have been discussed as part of the early-stage exploratory meetings.

I don’t know about awards but commercially it will be huge. But HBO Max really needs to expand overseas because this franchise has always been bigger worldwide than in the US.

The problem HBO Max has with expanding overseas is that they have so many content agreements. For example here everything that’s HBO and HBO Max (apart from We Are Who We Are, Love Life and co-productions like It’s a Sin, I May Destroy You and Years and Years) goes automatically on Sky (who is also a content partner with HBO as they produced both Chernobyl and I Hate Suzie). These content agreements are messy so it’s going to be a while before they expand (if they want to) outside the States. Same with Hulu because for example all of their FX on Hulu stuff automatically go on the BBC whilst all of their originals (apart from The Handmaid’s Tale) go on Amazon in the UK.

I love Harry Potter but JK Rowling makes me squirm nowadays so my feelings are mixed on this.

It feels like television is becoming more lucrative as a commercial venture and that after Game of Thrones each network and studio is trying to find the next book to small screen blockbuster adaptation to be “the next GoT” and score a gazillion tech Emmy nominations whilst they’re at it. It feels so tiresome and honestly prevents any original and bold stories from being told on television.

I hope the show will be about The Marauders. It’s the story literally every fan wants to see. No one asked for that Newt crap. Literally zero charisma and the story is as intersting as a white wall.

Above the line it could probably be another The Mandalorian. Doesn’t have any other nomination other than series. But below the line it will definitely be a huge contender.

I hope they are ethnically diverse with their casting like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was.

I grew up with Harry Potter. Dan Radcliffe and I are the same age. But any and all nostalgia I had for the series ended after Rowling’s bigotry became painfully clear.

That said, I suppose this was news was kind of inevitable. Disney+ has, like, 500 Star Wars tv shows in development, and with HBO Max trying to grow their subscriber base, of course they’re going to do the same with one of their most popular franchises.

The original books probably would have worked better as a tv series from the start. But obviously that particular ship has sailed.
