I am hesitant to add this into my predictions despite what appears to be a pretty positive critical response so far. It just seems like such tough subject matter for voters to sit through, and, given the timing, it is rubbing up right against the end of eligibility so I am not sure how many voters are gonna get to it before voting. The Emmys have been leaning more and more populist as of late so being the most acclaimed contender (even if you are on HBO) does not necessarily guarantee a nomination (let us not forget Show Me A Hero).

It could just be good trailer editing, but I do not see this moving like a David Simon show.

82 on Metacritic with 14 reviews ahead of Monday night’s premiere.

I’m not, but people are raving, and now this is a lock to win limited series.

I wouldn’t call it a lock just yet. While visibility isn’t always that important in this category (Patrick Melrose says hi), the show only hit a 0.19 for its premiere. Given the subject matter though, that may not be a problem. It should definitely be in people’s limited series predictions though; I currently have it in second place.

EDIT: Escape at Dannemora never even hit a 0.2, so it may not matter at all (though that was Showtime).

I watched the first episode. It was fine, though nothing made me think that this should be winning. Emily Watson does not appear in this episode. None of the performances so far were nomination worthy.

I would not predict Chernobyl to win based off of the first episode because it lacked characters, which made it rather cold. Jared Harris was only in the beginning and end and neither Stellan Skarsgård nor Emily Watson appeared. It is not like Escape at Dannemora or Sharp Objects were more impressive at their starts, but I was hoping for the second coming here. The spectacle was impressive and this is going to be a beast in the Creative Arts, but someone like Julianna Margulies at the forefront would have made this more commercial and accessible. Ratings are below Sharp Objects and True Detective, but its 0.8 million viewers and 0.2 rating beat Escape at Dannemora.

In terms of awards (I guess the purpose of this forum) I agree, but I thought the coldness and detachment in the episode was actually a positive thing. I like that they’re telling the story methodically and not making it a vehicle for actors. This is a lock for a nomination and at worst is third.

I thought it was a great start that really captured the drama and mystery of the event itself and setup well the suspense factor for the events to come. I have high hopes for the remaining episodes.

Am I the only one who is also noticing a lot of buzz about this show on Twitter?

I wonder if that is more reflective of its viewership than the ratings alone.

You’re definitely not the only one! The show also holds a 9.5 on IMDb, with the first episode having a 9.3 with nearly 1k votes; it has a 9.3 user rating on Metacritic, which is incredibly high. IMO this is a real dark horse in the limited series race.

Watching this now and I am floored. Only like 5 minutes left but my grade so far for “1:23:45” is A+.

The premiere was fantastic.  Incredibly ominous throughout.  Johan Renck is a force as director.  What a year for minis!

This was an incredible episode. Thrilling from start to finish, and completely fear-inducing. You could feel the tension throughout the entire episode. The direction & cinematography were absolutely phenomenal; don’t be surprised to see them snatch nods at the Emmys. Great way to see the explosion from someone’s house – the horror of it all became even more palpable. The entire production is mesmerizing. And with this acclaim by both critics and fans (the harmony you need), I see it making the limited series lineup.

As predicted, the actors probably won’t get any love. It just isn’t a character-driven show. As for Harris, whose character did have a big moment at thw beginning of the episode, I think his character is way too stoic to attract love from Emmy voters.
