Parson was good but just awful the way they finish his arc. Awful. Pope and Picking are so cute together.
Yeah, he went from being a villain to completely reformed in like five minutes. You could have made an entire episode about that transition. Just leaving out all of his character development and skipping to his redemption makes it feel so unearned.
Anyway, while I can completely do without the other young actors (excluding the criminally underutilized Criss), I’ll be happy to see Pope and Picking in another Murphy production. They’re great.

Mentioning Edmund Gwenn, I’m certain the only reason they didn’t have Corenswet beat him is because Miracle on 34th Street is such a popular and beloved classic and Murphy knew that people would be pissed if he made him lose in this story. And I can’t agree more about Harrier. Corenswet has his bad moments, but he’s mostly just bland. Harrier’s acting is so bad it really makes you wonder what was going on in her brain when the camera was rolling. Her supposedly brilliant audition consists of her looking constipated.
I think Meg, the movie that’s made in this series, is just so hamfisted and forced. Also can we talk about how the show has Robert Montgomery as the host of the 20th Oscars when in reality the hosts were Agnes Moorehead and Dick Powell? I do think the younger actors were done dirty on Hollywood. This premise had soooo much potential but the characters were just boring. You can’t watch Samara Weaving in The Babysitter and Ready Or Not and tell me the girl can’t knock it out of the park. She wasn’t given the chance to on Hollywood. I couldn’t believe that Meg won the Oscar because I do not believe it’s a good movie in the first place. Gosh Green Book is shooookkkdddddttt!

I know! I couldn’t believe she won an Oscar for that. I mean it would have been acceptable if Harrier’s performance is good if not great but she isn’t. Total miscast as Camille.

I disagree with this however. I thought his character should be bland as a neophyte aspiring actor. But what I like about Corenswet’s performance is that for me he was able to sold the desperation and the determination to be a good actor or at least a deserving leading man for Meg in his performance as Jack. Yeah, I think Harrier was not a good casting choice.
Jurnee Smollett for instance would be a way better choice.

Part of me thinks this revisionist idea would work better if they focused on a real-life actress. For example, think about how much more interesting it would be if made Hattie McDaniel or Anna May Wong one of the main protagonists of the series, instead of glorified side characters who have nothing to do while you make up a character who has no real personality (what is Camille Washington like outside of her struggle in the industry?).August 24, 2020 at 5:59 pm #1203665588

It should’ve been done in a much darker manner. The show comes as so light and fluffy, with it trying to make every main character likable and progressive and giving them their own happy endings. This comes across as so unrealistic and insensitive to the people who actually were oppressed against in that era.
A more realistic look at the era could’ve been far more powerful. The series tries to show show the prejudice of the time period, but it’s all undercut by how easily the main characters overcome it.
It was just a weird blend where it was both trying to be a love letter to old Hollywood and a deconstruction of it, and those two ideas really just don’t go together.

It also felt like a dumbed down budget version of Feud. Instead of interestingly capturing the dark dynamics and sinister behind the scenes games that Feud captured it just seemed soapy. And considering it was from Murphy and was directed by one of the directors of Fosse/Verdon it should have been much less melodramatic and soapy.

I personally feel it would have more impact if the show had real-life figures as the protagonists instead of making them up. Another nitpick. They made up an editor named Harry Golden and during the funeral scene he mentions saving a copy of The Wizard of Oz when they wanted to cut ‘Over the Rainbow’. I get this was for entertainment’s sake (although they actually did want to cut ‘Over the Rainbow’ in reality, thank god that didn’t happen), but the ACTUAL editor of The Wizard of Oz was a woman named Blanche Sewell. And they replaced her in the show with an old white guy. Again, super progressive show guys! Or maybe I’m just looking too much into things.
