This topic may or may not have been brought up here over the years. However, after watching the “Old Friends” episode of The Golden Girls for the millionth time, how could he have gotten snubbed his turn as Alvin, with Alzheimer’s disease?! He was nothing short of brilliant! I realize the guest performer categories were blended gender wise back then. But for him to miss a sport for AT LEAST a nomination was simply criminal.

I saw this episode today and Joe Seneca was very good in this episode. This episode was Estelle Getty’s submission when she won the Emmy and this episode was nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series so this episode was visible. I wonder if Joe Seneca was submitted.

GUEST PERFORMER IN A COMEDY SERIES – 1988

Beah Richards Frank’s Place Mrs. Varden CBS – WINNER
Herb Edelman The Golden Girls Stan Zbornak NBC
    Geraldine Fitzgerald Anna
Eileen Heckart The Cosby Show Mrs. Hickson
Gilda Radner It’s Garry Shandling’s Show Herself Showtime

Beah Richards definitely deserved her win for Outstanding Performer in a Comedy Series. I would say that Eileen Heckart was probably second based on the submission. If Joe Seneca was nominated, then he would have put up a good fight, but would have probably lost to Beat Richards

I definitely need to go back and watch Beah’s episode again, as I can’t imagine it coming close to Joe’s. But apparently the TV Academy that year begged to differ……

He probably would have easily made it into a gendered guest actor comedy category. If Herb Edelman could make it in, pretty much anyone could.

Herb Edelman was nominated twice for Guest Actor in a Comedy in 1987 and 1988 and had pretty good submissions.

The episode with Joe Seneca is called Old Friends which should have won the Directing Emmy over the submission from Hooperman which I think was the pilot.
