I personally think the biggest difference between Stewart and Colbert is that Colbert plays a character on his show, as is quite obvious. This is why I think (as GoldDerby has debated in the past) that he should submit in the Comedy Lead Actor category.
His show started in October 2005, meaning he would have first been eligible for the 2006 Emmys. Who would he have bumped from the category? Would he have ever won?November 6, 2013 at 6:52 am #305027
2006 – he would have bumped James and won considering Shalhoub already had two.
2007 – he would have bumped Shalhoub and repeated.
2008 – he would have bumped Shalhoub or Pace and lost to Baldwin.
2009 – he would have bumped Shalhoub and lost to Baldwin.
2010 – he would have bumped Morrison and lost to Parsons.
2011 – he would have bumped Galecki and won again.
2012 – he would have bumped Cheadle and lost to Cryer for some reason (he would then mock him hard on his show the next day).
2013 – he would have bumped Cheadle and won again since voters didn’t want to vote for CK for some reason.November 6, 2013 at 7:53 am #305028
None. None whatsoever.November 6, 2013 at 8:02 am #305029
Why are we discussing Emmys in the Oscar forums?November 6, 2013 at 8:21 am #305030
How do I fix that?November 6, 2013 at 8:35 am #305031
At least two (2006 and 2011 for sure)November 6, 2013 at 9:29 am #305032
None probably. Voters haven’t bitten on variety host/performers in the comedy series acting categories yet.November 6, 2013 at 9:37 am #305033
At least 3, and he would have been the frontrunner this year seeing how weak the category was.November 6, 2013 at 10:10 am #305034
Variety performers don’t win in comedy acting categories unless they host in SNL and it’s in guest. Colbert would stick out like a sore thumb since he doesn’t have plot and arc or even a situation to play. His work would likely never ever win even if he got nommed.Riley (the normal one, not the one who won the predictions contest)ParticipantNovember 6, 2013 at 10:53 am #305035
Why (I think) he did not submit as lead actor: http://www.goldderby.com/forum/topics/view/5287#post_192464November 6, 2013 at 11:22 am #305036
^^ Little did we know that he would win by submitting (just) a good episode.
I forgot about that thread, and I’m still kicking myself for changing my vote to The Daily Show at the last minute.November 6, 2013 at 11:35 am #305037
I’m inclined to say “zero” as well. Colbert’s routine wouldn’t fly in lead actor in a comedy series, no matter how amazing he is at doing it.November 6, 2013 at 12:12 pm #305038
None, because he isn’t in a comedy series.November 6, 2013 at 12:12 pm #305039
I think “zero” and “none whatsoever” are the correct answers.November 6, 2013 at 1:18 pm #305040
Almost every host of a variety series or talk show has some sort of constructed comedic persona, but that does not mean they should be submitting in the comedy acitng categories. Colbert is no different than, say, Letterman.
