Considering there are quite a few people from the UK on here and we were taking space in the BAFTA thread by talking about the show I was wondering what people who have seen it thought about I Hate Suzie.

I found it so heartbreakingly funny. I was worried Billie’s performance here was going to be a bit like a caricature but it really was so multi-faceted and so simple yet sophisticated. I think this is the second time this year (after Shira Haas in Unorthodox) where I found it easy to tell the difference between the nuances an actor puts in the performance elevating the material they’ve been given and the writing of their characters and have appreciated both of them.

I must say I fell off my chair when she decided to audition for the musical in episode 6…

If you’re in the UK and you haven’t seen it I’d recommend! Turns out 2020 can be lived through by watching high quality shows with pessimistic titles (I May Destroy You, I Hate Suzie).

Get your head out of your ass. It’s a great show if you actually bothered to watch it and Wolfali has every right to make a thread for it like we have for every other show. Just because the show hasn’t landed in the US yet doesn’t mean it won’t and if it does there could easily be many other users on here who will want to share their thoughts on it.

Get your head out of the sand. Wolf has every right to thread Suzie (as does any member about any show — there’s threads on here for The Expanse & Love Victor, for example).

Just because Suzie, which is acclaimed and popular in the UK and is available throughout majority Europe (like many users on here whom are form and live in those regions) isn’t available in the US right now doesn’t make it any less important. Especially in the year COVID-19 where distributors (hi Peacock & AMC) are scrambling to acquire anything to fill up content.

It’s not like this is a new practise too. Isn’t the current Emmy front-runner a Canadian export and the reigning incumbent another British export. Isn’t Hulu most popular show Love Island UK & one of the biggest Netflix hits the Great British Bake Off.

I really want to dedicate this thread to talking about the show more than the awards chances of a show. Yes this site is an awards site but as was pointed out to me on another thread awards aren’t everything and I think sometimes awards (whilst like Moira Rose it’s one of my favourite seasons to talk about) can take us away from talking about the most fascinating parts of a show. Sometimes we get more obsessed over saying “this person will sweep” instead of talking about why we liked a certain performance (i.e. the sophistication, the emotional connection the performer can deliver as the character that we as the audience can appreciate).

That being said you know how they have the BAFTA moments of the year? This should win it. This scene reminds me of something that is quite Fossean actually. Suzie is literally breaking down in this scene but instead of sobbing her eyes out or instead of conforming to what a breakdown looks like when portrayed on television she is putting on a smile and dancing in the street before drastically changing her emotions to portray her grief once she runs out of energy. It is both an incredibly heartbreaking and painful scene to watch as well as one that is quite entertaining.

I love I May Destroy You and think it’s the best show of the Summer but Piper has just overtaken Coel and Linney for me in performance of the YEAR so far.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Showtime picked this up. They showed Prebble and Piper’s other show Secret Diary of a Call Girl and campaigned it in Comedy so I guess they might campaign this there too if they picked it up (they also showed Penny Dreadful which also coincidentally starred Piper). Then again AMC seem to be picking up buzzy British shows left right and centre (whether its the widely seen biopic of the Novichok poisoning in the UK The Salisbury Poisonings or the contemporary London based rip off of Peaky BlindersGangs of London). I doubt HBO will pick this up but if they did they are most definitely not going to campaign this in the same category as I May Destroy You. If this goes on Netflix I think Piper could experience the same level of individual buzz as Haas (if not more considering how Piper is actually as established in the States as Coel if not more established).

I have high hopes for this show awards wise not only because it’s such a good show (IMO) but because the buzz for it here in the UK is surreal. Like I said no show not I May Destroy You not Quiz not Normal People was trending in the top 10 on Twitter for two days apart from this show and Piper has been going viral here and there on Twitter for the past week. It’s also arguably just as widely watched by the industry in the UK as both I May Destroy You and Normal People (people like Edgar Wright, Andrew Scott, Jodie Comer and Lily James have raved about the show).

I think at worst Piper’s name is on that BAFTA (sorry Michaela but at least you’ll be winning the Globe and the Emmy!).

I haven’t seen the show yet but I HIGHLY doubt this.

Why? I mean she was literally being talked about on the afternoon edition of the two big news broadcasters here in the UK (BBC and Sky although the latter isn’t really a surprise when they produced the show) when it was released, the buzz for her television return is high (which is probably because of how big a staple on British TV she was in the noughties and early 10s), as I mentioned people like Edgar Wright and Lily James have raved about her and the show and if BAFTA nominate Piper for a mediocre performance in a show everyone forgot about then why won’t they give her the win for her career best performance in a show EVERYONE in the industry is watching.

USA . I was stating that Hulu May be a possibility too . But I agree that Showtime it’s more likely . Specially since they have very few content right now due to shutdown . They are even airing british We Hunt Together at the moment

If Hulu airs it I think the show could end up exploding like Normal People. Nonetheless I think at the very least this is getting a writing nomination. I mean practically almost every high profile British TV writer has said it’s one of the best written things they’ve seen this year so it pretty much has (at the very least) the British bloc support that we’ve seen help things like Patrick Melrose and A Very English Scandal in Writing.

I can see Amazon airing it if they can’t get Maisel back on time. It practically is being marketed by the production company as Fleabag but as a Drama.

I thought I’d share some critics reviews from Rotten Tomatoes for the show (where it has 93% so far) :

Billie is one of the finest actors – when you see her on screen you never think about the actor, just the character she’s playing. You completely believe who she is in this.

    Scott Bryan
    BBC.com

Piper acts this to perfection… [But] it’s as if we’re on a theme-park ride that won’t stop or slow down, if only for a minute so that you and, more importantly, the characters, can pause, take a breather and assess what’s what.

    Deborah Ross
    The Mail on Sunday (UK)

I Hate Suzie is a bruised, bold and ultimately brilliant piece of television, it starts with an extended nervous breakdown and never lets up from there.

    George Griffiths
    Metro (UK)

A delight. Even the frustration is delightfully frustrating. It’s tightly-written, funny, and brilliantly well-acted.

    Eleanor Bley Griffiths
    Radio Times

I Hate Suzie is uniformly well-acted, sharply written and, above all, is ruthlessly accurate about fame in all its anxiety, mundanity and insincerity.

    Anita Singh
    Daily Telegraph (UK)

A truly astonishing performance from Piper embedded in six of the most exhilarating, scabrously funny half-hours of comedy drama the channel has yet produced.

    Lucy Mangan
    Guardian

I Hate Suzie explodes with energy and ideas. Co-created by playwright and Succession’s Lucy Prebble with Billie Piper, it’s an electrifying series that’s constantly shedding its skin to become something new.

    Louisa Mellor
    Den of Geek

Piper has a rare gift for eliciting sympathy, even as Pickles keeps making new mistakes in her effort to disguise the old ones.

    Ed Cumming
    Independent (UK)

I  Hate Suzie feels fresh and pacy with plenty of dry wit. My only objection is, why would you hate someone called Suzie?
