Considering there are quite a few people from the UK on here and we were taking space in the BAFTA thread by talking about the show I was wondering what people who have seen it thought about I Hate Suzie.
I found it so heartbreakingly funny. I was worried Billie’s performance here was going to be a bit like a caricature but it really was so multi-faceted and so simple yet sophisticated. I think this is the second time this year (after Shira Haas in Unorthodox) where I found it easy to tell the difference between the nuances an actor puts in the performance elevating the material they’ve been given and the writing of their characters and have appreciated both of them.
I must say I fell off my chair when she decided to audition for the musical in episode 6…
If you’re in the UK and you haven’t seen it I’d recommend! Turns out 2020 can be lived through by watching high quality shows with pessimistic titles (I May Destroy You, I Hate Suzie).

Get your head out of your ass. It’s a great show if you actually bothered to watch it and Wolfali has every right to make a thread for it like we have for every other show. Just because the show hasn’t landed in the US yet doesn’t mean it won’t and if it does there could easily be many other users on here who will want to share their thoughts on it.

Get your head out of the sand. Wolf has every right to thread Suzie (as does any member about any show — there’s threads on here for The Expanse & Love Victor, for example).
Just because Suzie, which is acclaimed and popular in the UK and is available throughout majority Europe (like many users on here whom are form and live in those regions) isn’t available in the US right now doesn’t make it any less important. Especially in the year COVID-19 where distributors (hi Peacock & AMC) are scrambling to acquire anything to fill up content.
It’s not like this is a new practise too. Isn’t the current Emmy front-runner a Canadian export and the reigning incumbent another British export. Isn’t Hulu most popular show Love Island UK & one of the biggest Netflix hits the Great British Bake Off.

Lol I love how this is essentially a censored version of what I said
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 5, 2020 at 3:17 am #1203687447I love this show. Still waiting for Billie to get the attention she deserves.

ReplyCopy URLSeptember 5, 2020 at 1:34 pm #1203688218I think at worst Piper’s name is on that BAFTA (sorry Michaela but at least you’ll be winning the Globe and the Emmy!).
I haven’t seen the show yet but I HIGHLY doubt this.

September 5, 2020 at 2:11 pm #1203688300USA . I was stating that Hulu May be a possibility too . But I agree that Showtime it’s more likely . Specially since they have very few content right now due to shutdown . They are even airing british We Hunt Together at the moment
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 5, 2020 at 2:34 pm #1203688319Why? I mean she was literally being talked about on the afternoon edition of the two big news broadcasters here in the UK (BBC and Sky although the latter isn’t really a surprise when they produced the show) when it was released, the buzz for her television return is high (which is probably because of how big a staple on British TV she was in the noughties and early 10s), as I mentioned people like Edgar Wright and Lily James have raved about her and the show and if BAFTA nominate Piper for a mediocre performance in a show everyone forgot about then why won’t they give her the win for her career best performance in a show EVERYONE in the industry is watching.
I just think that with the voting system BAFTA use, Piper isn’t able to beat Coel. Coel has more prestige in the industry, the subject matter her show tackles is arguably more important (though of course I Hate Suzie is also topical), and IMDY is more of a feat given that Michaela wrote/directed/produced it. While the panel will obviously be voting on acting for that category, this will probably influence their decision as well.

Showtime actually makes so much sense, the sensibilities of Suzie is just like their early 2010s female dramedies.
Non-spoiler but the shoe shop scene in episode 7 is the funniest thing I’ve seen all year.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 14, 2020 at 10:19 am #1203705436Any word on an airdate for the U.S.? I saw Billie Piper live in Yerma when the production moved to New York for a limited run, and she honestly gave the best female acting performance I have ever seen. And no, I do not say that lightly and without major consideration of everything I’ve seen.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 14, 2020 at 4:27 pm #1203706428Australian here. It’s on Stan for us. Will be watching in the next couple of weeks. Love Billie!!
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 14, 2020 at 5:45 pm #1203706727Oh I didn’t know it was on in Australia already? Would you say it has buzz there (it has huge buzz for a programme on Sky which is like the UK equivalent of cable here)? What episode are you on as well?
I haven’t started it yet. Honestly I only get my news on what to watch from this site, so I can’t say when it came out or whether it has buzz. I saw people talking about it here, I like Billie Piper and searched for it on Stan – hey presto it was there! Stan will also be screening PEN15 same day as US. As our colonial and cultural overlords, British TV is huge in Australia so it’s not a surprise, and Billie is well known here, particularly from Doctor Who.
I pay literally no attention to entertainment media or commercial media (hence how I heard about Stateless from UNHCR, not from Australian media). I am a terrible barometer. But my friends all come to me for hot tips – so GD has a far greater influence than entertainment advertising!
